amber arrow alert

I posted about this problem before but have yet to solve it. My 2000 V-70 began to flash the amber arrow on the lover portion of the instrument cluster about a month ago. At the time that this began, my daughter was driving the car and thought that it was an indication of transmission trouble. Indeed, this is what the owner's manual states. When I drove out to switch cars with her, I found that, while the amber arrow did indeed start blinking on start up, the car shifted normally and the fluid was red and to the mark. I tried a fix that Klaus recommended---moving the shifter back and forth numerous times---but to no avail. The other day the car shifted rather lazily out of first gear, but this lasted only a very short while before returning to normal. I did notice that the speedometer is now acting up---working then not working. Could the two problems be related? I know that the speedometer problem is usually related to weak solders in the ABS unit. Is it possible that the ABS unit defect could also cause the amber arrow to flash, or is this an unrelated coincidence?

I thought that it might be helpful to someone else that I post a follow-up to my own message from back in July. Because I own a small fleet of V70's, at this point,I took the one with the trans shift issue off the road for a couple of months and had my daughter drive another. When I finally got around to following up on the trans shift issue I pulled up codes and found none relating to the flashing shift arrow. According to the owner's manual, the flashing arrow indicates a gear box problem, but the trans fluid was at level and did not appear discolored of have any indication of a burnt smell.Taking a flyer, I secured a trans computer from a local u-pick-it yard for about $30 ---problem solved! There was no connection to the speedometer/ABS module, I am currently working on that one---attempting to solder a capacitor ,that had dislodged itself, back into the board. wish me luck

I have been sorting through the problems bit by bit. Today I reinstalled the ABS module that I have been working on. I opened it up with a razor knife and found that a capacitor had become dislodged. After obtaining some solder. solder wick, and soldering tips from the owner of a local electronics shop, and watching a youtube tutorial on soldering, I successfully reattached the capacitor to the board and sealed up the unit with epoxy meant for bumper repair. Although the ABS light is still on, my speedometer and odometer now work again! I am going to examine and clean the individual wheel sensors next to see if I can get the ABS light to go out.

It very well could be the ABS unit failing. You really need to get the codes read, the Shift arrow light indicates a code present in the transmission control unit.

If the error points you to a failed speedometer reading, then the ABS unit is at fault.
