A/C not holding charge V70-XC70 1998

My 98 v70 awe with 207k miles seems not to be holding the a/c coolant. My daughter reports that it worked for about two weeks after I charged it during hot, humid weather in upstate NY, but is much weaker now. I am guessing a small leak somewhere, so I am wondering whether to recharge it with a product containing leak-stop, or if that may not be a good idea. I don't want to make it worse. Thanks!

You could use a can with dye, the use an IR light to look for the leak. Most leaks are in either the evaporator, which you cannot easily see, or the schrader valve at the low pressure port.

If it is the evaporator, that is billed as an 8 hour job to replace the evaporator. More than the car is worth. The dash and anything attached to the firewall must come out of the car...

Due to the nature of R134a, the warmer the temperature, the more the gas expands. On hot days, it will leak faster due to the higher pressure, then when the outside temps cool, the efficiency of the system will decrease.

If the evaporator is going to be replaced, assume that the drier bottle also gets replaced. If you can find a new schrader valve, replace that also.
