asking for a neighbor with mileage unknown 2000...erratic running/and occasional stallout after start up...fuel pump relay recently replaced..neighbor did some investigation, seems to believe tone ring kaput...how exactly does this part function, and what are actual symptoms of a one going south?...my '98 soldiers on

I would wiggle the ignition switch if the car has a regular key.

neighbor did some diagnosis...turns out to be faulty new fuel pressure relay...hoping dealer who installed is kind to them...
