Sourcing axle shaft replacements... Factory only or reman? S80

This is for a 1999 Volvo S80. 88k miles on odometer.

My local Indie volvo shop says one of my axle shafts has some slop and will need replacement before long.

Factory parts are expensive -- $600++

Remanufactured units are much less expensive, but I wonder about the quality.

Anybody have experience with the 3rd-party remanufactured units? I'm guessing the quality isn't there but thought I'd ask before I popped for factory parts...

    I've had good luck with new Chinese replacement axles in an 850 and my current 2005 S40. With the regular 20-30% discounts, convenience, and warranties available from Advance Auto, Autozone and the like, I can't help but take a chance.

    My Honda is a different story. I went that route on them and instantly regretted it. Vibrations under power from day one. Online forums all confirm that Hondas are very particular about their CV axles and it's best to stick with OEM. Volvos, in my experience, are not so particular.

      I have used the aftermarket axles in both my Volvo’s and my Passat with no problems. Although they won’t last as long as OEM they are much, much cheaper.

      Will I buy another Volvo??? We'll see....

        while initially leery about Pacific Rim parts...I avoid as much as possible..the $66 Cv axle I purchased has given me a year and 10k trouble free miles..'98 S70

    Personally I would take a rebuilt Volvo axle (GKN) over the typical auto parts store offerings. Several years ago I sent the axles from a couple different cars to a place called Axles Unlimited in NC and had good results. There other places that rework them also. You just want to make sure they truly rework the mechical innards and don’t just clean and repack/reboot them.
