Gas pedal sticks ('98 v70) V70-XC70 1998

We have a 98 V70 which, during cold weather, has a sticking accelerator pedal. Not sure where or with what to lubricate it. Suggestions are appreciated, as always. Thanks!

Take a T25 and remove the plastic cover over the throttle body. Using lithium grease or even WD40, spray any moving part.
Most often, the real problem will be the throttle cable rubbing against the sheathing. Loosening the throttle cable at the throttle body, holding it up and spraying WD40 or oil into the sheathing and letting it drain towards the firewall helps a lot. After oiling, move the cable a dozen times. Don't forget how to wrap the cable back onto the spool! Take a before picture.

If I'm not mistaken, 1998 was Volvo's the first year with throttle-by-wire. There is no throttle cable to hang up. Only an accelerator pedal assembly and a problematic electronic throttle module (ETM).

Kevin, is the stickiness due to the pedal itself, that it doesn't return? If so you should be able to unplug and unbolt it from the firewall for closer inspection; perhaps a broken return spring or worn pivot joint?

Sure sounds like a scary condition to be dealing with.

Believe 98 was the last year with a throttle cable. 99 is the first year with ETM.

98’s, more than other V70’s, are essentially an updated 850...:)

Aha! I should not have doubted Klaus. Especially since, as I now recall, methinks they have/once had a '98 V70R.

I supposed I assumed that the change to throttle by wire coincided with the facelift/name change. That's what I get for assuming...

          Thanks for setting me straight,
          -Will

            A couple of times I almost bought a 98 V70GLT.
I believe you are correct that Klaus did own a 98 V70R.

            Never doubt Klaus...:)

              I always doubt myself.

Yes, I did own a 1998 V70R, three times. I sold it three times and bought it back twice. An excellent highway cruiser with throttle to spare at 80mph.
