timing a V70XC

There is a 2001 Volvo V70XC for sale locally at around a thousand. Seller says it is out of time and will require a mechanic to time it. Leaking rad as well.

Are these notably difficult to time? Does the computer make life more complicated? Or will the standard timing gun do the job?

Body and interior look good. Seller says he has bought another vehicle.

Whaddaya think?

In the long (or sometimes short) run a cheap Volvo can turn out to be expensive.

Ask around the local salvage yards what the car's junk value is.

At least you will know what worst case might be.

The new Volvos cannot be timed, it is all computer driven. Well, mostly. The engine on the 2001 XC has a VVT, variable valve timing, which alters the timing a little bit depending on rpm and engine load. The VVT has a controlling solenoid at the top of the engine, driven by oil pressure, and that can clog up.

IF the timing belt broke, a bent valve or two will be a problem requiring the valves to be replaced. Not a fun job. I could imagine someone putting a new belt on the engine and driving it like a noisy 4 cylinder.

Usually, the price of the 2001 reflects the poor reliability of the automatic tranny.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

He did not mention anything about a broken timing belt so I would take it from your reply that the VVT might be a culprit for the timing issue. It does not sound like it would be an expensive bear to change out from your description. I could offer him five hundred if I want to go forward.

Your warning about the transmission is a caution however. I did not know about this reputation and automatic transmissions are something I do not touch. Have to think that one over.
