Cam position sensor 850 1995

My 850 wouldn't start the other day, and I wasn't home! I checked the fuel, that was OK. Then I checked OBDI and got 3-1-4, cam position sensor failure. Fortunately, resetting the code allowed the engine to start and I drove home.

I ordered a Meyele CPS for $28 and stuffed it in the car.

I later examined the original 1995 CPS. No moving parts, nothing to wear out? The piece of metal that senses the cam movement had a little grunge on it, that cleaned off with a paper towel. The male prongs of the connector had a light coating of green - corrosion which came off with an old toothbrush.

As far as I am concerned, I now have an old stock, working CPS on my workbench. It will probably go another 182,000 miles.

Nice side benefit, the new rear cam seal that I put in 2 years ago is working just fine!

In the vintage Audi world, meyle stuff is low quality. 850 1995

You might be better off putting the original part back in, it's less likely to fail when a 18 wheeler is tailgating you on Interstate 95.

The only failure is the ability to start the engine. Once running, it will continue to run.

As for I-95 and tailgating trucks, I have only had a truck tailgate me in my 1964 VW convertible. And I-95 is a two day drive from here. I hope I never have to drive from NYC to Washington, DC again!

Klaus, Your note about I-95 NYC to DC couldn't have been more timely for me. A couple of weeks ago the racing organization of which I'm a part ran at Dominion Raceway just off I-95, 60 miles south of DC. The trip down on I-95 from the NY metro area was miserable. For the trip back I headed west to I-81N to I-78E. Cost us an additional 75 miles or so and paid off with a totally stress free trip.
And as a side note--a while back I was getting a fault code indicating a problem with the cam sensor on our 2002 S40. A used original from a Pull-a-Part yard set it right. - Dave

I really like I-81 through the valley. What a beautiful drive and totally stress free.

It's just a large task in a turbo. I cleaned it up, greased the male plug, put it in a box with the other spares.

    Klaus,

The $28 was tuition for learning what can cause of cam position sensor to fail. Money well spent. Kudos to you for diagnosing the problem. Now you know why I hang onto every word you write on this website.

    Hugh
