Misfire on Cyl 5 (P0305) V70-XC70 2005

I assume I need to replace the #5 coil, but after a couple of years driving this XC70, it seems strange it has only happened twice, both while towing our pop-up camper. The first time was after a couple of hours on the freeway in near 100 heat, the second time after several hours in mild weather and after a stop mid-way. In both cases after a stop, the problem went away. Is there something about the added stress of towing a trailer that would cause an issue with the coil?

What kind of spark plugs are you using? Towing a trailer, along with filling the rear of the car with gear, adds a lot of weight. The additional stress causes you to use more gasoline, especially going up hill at low rpms. That can cause an over-rich condition if the plug gaps are not at .028 or a smaller spark from iridium type plugs.

On long up hills, it is best to downshift to 4th (500 rpms faster). This also helps the tranny keep cool by increasing its pump speed.

The first time this happened, nearly a year ago, I changed the plugs to Volvo plugs, not sure what kind those were, nothing special like the platinum plugs, and checked the gaps, of course. Both times happened on the freeway, cruising at near the speed limit (60-65). I'll try rotating the coil to a different cylinder, but it will probably be awhile before I see any result ;-)

Check the plugs and rotate the coils to a different position. The pig tails to the coils also go bad so double check them.
