diagnose alternator noise S60 2003

My niece dropped off her 2003 S60 for a noisy serpentine belt idler. Carefully poking around with a stick it seems like the vibration and noise is coming from the alternator. How do I determine if it the alternator bearings or the freewheel clutch that has gone bad ?
Thanks
Greg

You are a brave man for taking the responsibility for your niece's 16 year old car with a noise.

when you have the belt off, try to check everything touched by the belt.

I actually like my dealer and would send her to their shop.

It is not a big deal. I have been looking after 'old' cars my whole life. My niece is broke and the dealer charges somewhere north of $120 per hour. Besides, there is no fun in having someone else work on my cars. There is a '67 Volvo in my shop that is getting reacquainted with twin SUs...

The dealer is north of $135/hour and they would charge 1 hour to do the diagnosis and 2+ to put in a new pulley + $115 for the part.

When those twin SU's are put in Xena, take a test drive by my house and let me see!! I loved that car.

All I can suggest is unhooking the belt and check for play in the clutch.

Good call Klaus. I took the belt off and the play in the pulley was significant. If it was obvious that it was the problem.
Thanks
Greg
