Suddenly the fuse (#35) blows immediately, any ideas where to look first? This is a manual, if that makes a difference. I've had the car several months and haven't done any work on the instrument cluster. There had been some work done under the dash on the driver's side (cover is held with zip ties). I have to get in there eventually, but haven't yet. Maybe a loose wire there?

Headlight switch or moon roof (less likely unless wet). Are the daytime running lights on? Turn them off if you can. Put the dimmer switch in the off position, this is usually the problem.
How in the heck are the zip ties routed? Find a couple of T25 screws, glue the plastic so it is stiff again, then screw it back on.

No moon roof on this car. I didn't really think I would miss that, but I do ...
I'll try the other things. I have to get a new radiator into the XC70 before I can tackle that.
The PO had disabled some things since the door-open reminder wouldn't stop dinging. He took out a relay and maybe a fuse, he couldn't remember. Speaking of which, how does the car know that the door is still open? No button in the door frame like the 240s as far as I can tell. I haven't wanted to cut the zip ties until I was ready to deal with the door issue.

There is a micro switch in the door lock assembly, not accessible. The wiring is usually at fault, check around the hinge between the door and frame.
I assume the PO removed the relay for the door chime. It is located above the brake pedal - blue.
Sometimes a shot of lubricant into the door switch can reverse the problem. Look closely at the door latch mechanism, at the bottom of the latch is a small metal piece that can be moved outwards by hand. That can get dirty and cause the switch to not move properly. Use the outside door handle to release the switch before closing the door

So I replaced the door chime and everything works normally, as far as I can tell. The interior lights come on and, after closing the door, go off after a delay.
But the instrument lights continue to frustrate. According to everything I can see, fuse #35 should only affect interior lighting (which seems fine) and "accessories," though I don't know what those would be on this model. Maybe the short circuit is unrelated to the instrument lights, power for which should be coming through different fuses? I pulled out the rheostat expecting to see an "in" and an "out" wire, but it's way more complicated than that with half a dozen wires of various sizes. Is there a way to test it's functioning without doing damage to something else? Would be nice if I could swap from the 850 or the XC, but of course they're both totally different....

Hmmm, maybe these issues are unrelated. Probing the back of the connector to the rheostat, I get 12V at the Y/Brown wire at #1, all others are 0 regardless of position of the rheostat. Guess I need to make a pick-n-pull trip and ignore fuse #35 for now.

If you go to a P&P, pick up some T25 screws for the kick panels.

I went to ebay instead, cheaper than driving to the PnP. It's going to take more than a couple of screws to get the panel back together. As I recall from the 850, the top hangs from a couple of metal brackets that engage the dash. The slots on the dash are torn out and the brackets are gone. Someone must have sent in the gorillas :-(

Replacing the dimmer fixed the instrument lights, fuse 35 unrelated ...

Does that mean #35 still blows?

Yes, it does, but I'm not going to worry about it for the moment. Now that I have some new clips, I need to deal with the floppy tailgate liner: the lock stopped responding to the central locking, maybe there's an issue in there. The other doors are fine, it's just the tailgate. (I had had to repair the license plate lights, which are also working normally. The lock worked for a while, then stopped responding to the key at the front door.)
