2002 V70 ETM Problem? V70-XC70 2002

Hi BB team. My wife's '02 V70 Turbo showed classic symptoms of ETM (electronic throttle module) failure 3 months ago (car went into limp mode, no codes, ran fine the next day). Took it to the dealer, who confirmed it was most likely the ETM, and dealer replaced it ($1,200 !!!). Car ran fine for about a month, then did the same thing again (again, no codes). Per BB post, I replaced MAF, which supposedly fails shortly after the ETM. Car ran fine for another few weeks, then ... another limp-mode episode identical to the first two. My wife took the car to the dealer (in limp mode), but the tech "was out for lunch" (grrr). Left the car at the dealer, when their tech was back, car ran fine (of course). Now dealer does not know what to do next (?!?!). Should I request a refund for the $1,200, and take the car to another dealer? Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Bernie

The ETM was a problem for 1999-2000, 'fixed' by 2001-2002. Limp mode without codes is not an ETM problem. A scan of the under dash computers is probably needed, along with a check of the transmission fluid.

Get money back from a dealer? LOL.

      2002 V70 ETM Problem? V70-XC70 2002

      Hello Klaus:

As always, thanks for your advice. I understand that the bad ETM was a problem for V70's produced in 1999 - 2001 (see this reference: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17252).

But, is it possible that it affected some (early) 2002 models? My son's 2002 NON-turbo V70 exhibited the same issue a few months earlier (except that it was in constant limp-mode), and replacement of the ETM fixed the issue.

Anyway, what would a scan of the dashboard computer accomplish? How does transmission fluid play into this?

      Best regards.

      Bernd

One of the dash computers is a CAN/BUS which controls all communication between the computers. It is a known problem as its can overheat. Hard to diagnose.

Another problem with the ETM: dirt. It needs to be removed and the throttle body cleaned, along with the pedal position sensor portion. Check the plug connectors for corrosion as well.

"Limp mode" without an error message is quite rare. There should at least be a warning shown in the left side of the instrument cluster. You might want to scroll through the messages.

Do all of the instrument cluster warning lights work when you turn the key to position II, before starting the engine?

          Hello Klaus:

Thank you for your feedback. Again, the ETM was replaced with a new one (I would assume the dealer knew to perform the other things you recommend, including checking plug connectors). But, I will share your thoughts with the dealer next time this happens. BTW, the only warning that shows up is a "Reduced Engine Performance" warning on the left side of the instrument cluster (no check engine light). And yes, all the instrument cluster warning lights work when turning the key to position II before starting the engine.

          Thanks again.

          Bernd

You might want to go to an auto parts store and ask to use a scanner. It might produce a meaningful code!

The transmission can go into limp mode to protect itself. Check fluid level and fluid condition. Specifically look for burnt fluid. Smell it too.

I’ll defer to Klaus regarding scanning the under dash computers.
