Gentlepersons,

Just picked up another C30, a home mechanic's C30 for a song. 115K on it but alas, his timing belt swap was a semi disaster, yes, I'm looking at replacing 10 or 20 valves, not sure which yet. This is the B5254T7 engine. So, how does one get the cam timing cam plate off the end of the camshafts that are used for the cam position sensors?

I tried the T30, wouldn't fit, went to the T27 Torx and tried removing the center bolt counter clock wise. That sucker wouldn't budge right up to where the T27 snapped.

I'll take any ideas as I'd like to find out if it is 10 or 20 valve bent so I can decide between a new used head or rebuilding this one. I should be able to use the cam lock tools once that sensor cog is off the end of the shafts.

    Sounds like you used a Torx angle tool. You need a T27 bit on a 3/8 ratchet. First, align the bit on the screw and give it a 'tap' with a hammer. Then use the ratchet.

    If the engine turns over, you probably have 2 bent valves. Never 10 or 20!

      Klaus,
      Thank you for the advice, I learned from your input AND fixing it! Yes, I had to drill out the 987959 bolts on both cams. You must remove the battery and housing to have room for that effort!

      When I went to put it back together after the cam and crank locks were in place, I put in the new 987959 using a ground down T30 and I could torque the new bolts in with a half inch ratchet.

      After compression testing the car, #5 was a hair low, but once I put a touch of oil in all five cylinders, the pressures were within a few PSI of each other, ie. no bent valves! I will take that miracle thank you!

      Reassembled everything else vital to running, and that is what that T5 did without error codes. Tapped in the 1397381 plugs (2) and verified zero leaks. Tomorrow I should get the fender liner, harmonic balancer, and outer belt installed. After that is the wheel and taking a drive. Amazingly, no valves were bent, so a timing belt change and timing realignment have brought a 2012 C30R back to life. Ten hours of work $49 in dealer parts, and now the R is alive! Initial cost was $1500 with leather interior, $49 in parts, and 10 hours of time. Yes, I will accept better lucky than good! 115,000 on the clock.

        Dayum! Yes, better lucky than good, but give yourself some credit for taking on the risk and the work.

          After what I've been through the physically over the past 10 years, I have learned I must choose my battles wisely. In the opinions group there were so many that were so full of the coolaid that they would hate everything that contradicted their only belief. That type of person can't think of anything outside of their own box, so why bother, just sit back and laugh! What was the name of that one lady (Flabfav?) that always dished it out but couldn't take it? I presume she has gone her own way by now... no way hate could live that long!

          Changing topics, once I get the R cleaned up, I'll probably sell it and buy a new transaxle to replace the weakening one in the Boxster. Yeah, can hardly walk, have no sense of balance, but came in first in class for the P3 group in 17 and 18 in AX. Hard to believe an 18 year old Boxster can still beat a stock base model 911.

            More and more Kool-Aid being passed around these days. I liked that here there were more than a few folks who possessed unique perspectives and could express them rather eloquently. Don't encounter that just anywhere.

            It's been a loong time since I did any autocrossing. Did my time in a FSAE car which allowed me a FTD once or twice (like fishing in a barrel driving one of those). However I quickly learned that I'm not cut out to be a racing driver. As I'm sure you know, good driving can make up a lot against a newer, "faster" car.

              Will, believe it or not, I got involved in AX as I was coming out of MS Relapse. The purpose was to ensure I could still drive and relearn how to do so. I ran the C30 at first followed by the 06 XC70, and finally the 10 pounds per one HP Boxster. And eventually, I enjoyed AX, that Is when the Boxster got all new suspension and R series tires. It is now 99% track car while being street legal... for a 28 Chevy!
