Very strange, sudden electrical failure V70-XC70

2001 V70 T5, auto trans, 185k.

Tonight I started the car and had this bizarre array of sudden problems:

* Dashboard dead. No dash light, speedo, tach and gauges not functioning.
* Turn signals non responsive. Brights non responsive.
* Headlights working, but headlight switch does nothing.
* Map/overhead lights non responsive.
* Radio and HVAC controls all illuminated and working normally.
* Driver and passenger footwells illuminated, would not go off.
* Car drives normally.

I drove about two miles to get home. Turned off the engine and removed key. HVAC stayed lit and working! Footwells stayed illuminated! Restarted car a few times. No change. With those interior lights refusing to go out I feared killing the battery so I pulled the negative cable. Haven't reattached and restarted yet (15 degrees out there. brr.).

Anyone have a sense for what has happened here, and what to do next??

Thanks,
Dan

Does your car have a key ignition switch? If so, I suspect the electrical portion of your ignition switch.

Fairly common problem and not a really serious repair.
