replacing front hub S40-V40 2007

I have my neighbor's S40 in my garage and we are trying to replace the front hub. Pulling it out was pretty straight forward. Pressing the new hub into the steering knuckle does not look so easy. It is a GEN2 style hub where the hub and bearing come as an assembly. Just pressing it in seems like it will wreck the bearing, which is the problem he already has. We need to reach around the stud flange and push on the outer race. Space is tight. What has worked for you ?

Thanks

Greg

Have you tried freezing the bearing and heating the hub to 350F? This is the same bearing used in the Ford Focus, so O'reiley or NAPA might have a loaner press tool for a 78mm hub.

      Hi Klaus,
I think that it is similar but not sure if it the same. I tried O'Reilly's and they had a useable puller once I ground the heads off the studs and knocked 3 of them out of the way. The puller looked substantial but I had to straighten it with a press. NAPA doesn't have anything even close. I stopped at Absolute in Delano and Chad said that they had sent someone with a similar issue to Borton. I called Borton and the service writer said he would have to check with the techs to see if they had the tooling to press the hub into the knuckle! The techs won't be in until 7:30 tomorrow morning...

Freezing the bearing and heating the knuckle could give me a few thousandths. I have a couple meetings in Minneapolis tomorrow and I'm thinking I'll stop by Discount Steel and see what they have for 5/16" cold rolled plate.

      Greg
