P0410 code 97 850 (DEQ related) 850 1997

I went to DEQ (I live in Oregon, we have to do all cars 75 and newer...stupid rule).

I didn't pass.

The diagnostic trouble code was P0410 (AIR system). I've done some research on it, and it sounds like it's the SAS purge pump doohicky...but I have a related question.

1: The CEL is not illuminated. It might be a burnt bulb.

2: The test results from DEQ had FAIL under the MIL option (malfunction indictor light). I'm not sure if that means that means the CEL is support to be on and isn't because of #1.

3: For the last few weeks, the first time I start the car (and only the first time), the car hesitates and tries to stall.

Could #3 be related to the code/purge pump issue?

    P0410 code 97 850 (FIXED...?) 850 1997

I went through DEQ again and this time passed. It appears that the hose that goes from the air filter to behind the engine was the issue?

    P0410 code 97 850 (DEQ related) (update) 850 1997

So my bubl for the CEL was out. I swapped it with one of the spares and my CEL did not stay on when I started the car up.

I ran the codes and cleared them (after I changed the bulb). Haven't had a chance to check the hoses or the purge doohicky.

      P0410 code 97 850 (DEQ related) (update) 850 1997

      Update 2:

There is a hard plastic tube that goes from the thing off the air filter box, to the back of the engine.

It connects to a metal tube.

The connection between the two was toast.

I wonder if that could be part of the issue.

        P0410 code 97 850 (DEQ related) (update) 850 1997

The P0410 points directly to the air pump malfunction. An expensive fix. But... consensus is that clearing the code, getting the engine hot before the test, will let you pass inspection.

Sweedspeed.com has a SAS "delete" procedure, which I did on my 1998.

It is easy to check the bulb for the CEL/MIL. Turn key to posII and see if the light is on.

You could plug the end of the metal tube going to the exhaust header...

I scanned the car, cleared the codes, and so far haven't had a CEL come on. I'm going to probably go for a drive today (a longerish one) so I will check after that.

Hopefully it passes DEQ this week.
