Timing belt S70 2000

I changed the timing belt on this car in 2009, at 104,000 miles. It currently has 169,000 miles. At our current mileage rate of about 3100 miles/ year, it will take 13 more years to reach the mileage recommendation for changing the belt. Is there a time schedule in addition to the mileage recommendation for changing the timing belt? I did not change the water pump in 2009, or if I did,I didn’t record it in my log.

This is my wife’s car, and she loves it. We have had it for 19 years. We also have had 2 164e models, a 740 wagon, an 840 wagon, a 960 sedan, and 2 other s70s. My daughter still has one of the s70s, a 98, made in Canada. These were / are all great cars. I could never have maintained or repaired or afforded these cars without the help of Brickboard and it’s members….especially Klaus.
Thank you all….

The Volvo water pumps are metal and last over 200K miles, if the proper antifreeze is used.

The timing belts are usually good for 15 years (I would not go longer than that). Your belt deserves inspection as it is 60K miles old. Changing a belt also requires a tensioner and idler pulleys for 2000.

Do check the serpentine belt for wear and cracking.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

I finally got to this job. I bought all Volvo parts and replaced the timing belt, idler, tensioner and water pump. Thanks for your opinions and help in the past. My wife loves this car so I’ll do everything I can to keep it running.

Volvo used to put mileage and TIME in their manual for periodic maintenance.

Check your manual to see if the time frames are included.

If you look at an old timing belt, you might be surprised at the size of it considering how much work it has to do.

Also visit the Gates belt company site to see if they still send a free gauge to measure the grooves in the serpentine belt - new belts no longer crack like the older ones did. They wear out much like the tread on a tire does.

My dealer does not use those gauges, they think that you replace belts according their schedule - they might think that the belt is not so old.

10 years - If more than 10 years old it should be changed as the rubber deteriorates. The water pump should be changed too. Especially if it is the original!
