Ignition wont turn V70-XC70 2000

I parked the V70 last night with no problems but this morning the ignition would not turn at all. I tried moving the wheel a little left and right to see if it was binding but that does not appear to be the case.

It just seems like the tumblers are not recognizing the key but not sure.

Is there an easy way to fix this?

You're going to have to replace the ignition lock. T here is nothing electrical that would prevent the key from turning. You can buy the lock 2 ways, one, a random key code, which comes with 2 keys that would have to be programmed to the car, but would NOT work in the doors. glove box, or tailgate/trunk. The other, the lock is assembled to the key code for the car, and does not come with new keys, but only a dummy key with no fob. with this, your original master keys will work in all locks, and no programming is required.

      Ignition wont turn V70-XC70 2000

With school starting, it took me a little while to get to investigating the problem. When I got into the steering column, I found the ignition switch worked fine -- I could start the engine with a screwdriver if the key was in the ignition. The key still won't turn however.

Next thing to do is remove the key lock itself. There were two bolts holding it in but they seem to have some unusual pattern. Is there a special bit needed to remove these two?

Since it is the tumblers, can a locksmith repair them or do I need to order a new lock mechanism and have it keyed to my original key. I was hoping to avoid doing any re-programing if possible.

I have had the same problem with the 2000 V70 that I used to own. It is a broken piece of the lock assembly that is jamming it. If you remove the plastic cladding under the steering wheel you will be able to look up to see the mechanical part of the ignition lock assembly. It is pot metal, but there is a cadmium plated steel square staked in at the bottom (a couple of cm across, if memory serves). If you dremel/drill the staked parts out, you can remove the spring and the broken piece of the mechanism. This frees up the ignition to turn again. Then release the steering lock cable at the ignition lock assembly-- you can just leave it loose in there. Now you can start the car, but the steering lock will no longer be functional, but I wasn't worried about someone stealing a 20 year old Volvo!

I think there are picture tutorials on this over at Matthew's Volvo Site.

        Good luck!

If you’re referring to the two snap head bolts that hold the lock assembly to the dash board structure, you have to drill/grind/chisel the heads off of them or drill into them and use an easy-out. You can replace them with regular hex head bolts when you reassemble.

Once the lock assembly is out of the car you can remove the lock cylinder per the video I linked in my previous post. If the problem is what I think it is you can fix it for $0.00. If you want to try the DYI fix then post back once the cylinder is out.

If the key won't turn to pos I, and you wiggled the wheel while trying to turn the key, dirt or something else is jamming up the lock. Try some silicone spray to clean it out.

Make sure the key is clean also.

I should have mentioned the PNP was replaced as well as starter + electrical cables a few years ago so really no issues that way.

When I put the key in the ignition and I have the door open, it does chime which means electrically, the lock is detecting the key and the ignition is getting power.

It is correct that I can't even turn the key to any position. I tried both keys, and cleaning by spraying a little in the lock cylinder plus cleaning the key shaft. No difference. If there is any dirt in the ignition tumblers is there a way to take the lock mechanism out to clean it?

Do these older cars have transponders in the key fob itself? If something went wrong there could that be preventing it from turning the ignition?

Is there anything electrical like a switch at the brake pedal of that shift lock button that could prevent the ignition switch from turning or it can only be the lock mechanism itself?

If the wont turn to ANY position , the lock cylinder is trash and is going to have to be replaced. Your going to have to remove the airbag and steering wheel, and drill out the shear bolts that hold the lock assembly. There is a transponder in the key but has NOTHING to do with the key not turning. The turning of the key is completely mechanical. And the cable that goes down to the shifter is not likely to cause the lock to not turn. It would only cause the key not to return to 0 , and t hen you wouldn't be able to remove the key. A locksmith might be able to get it working again, its a crap shoot. You can get the lock cylinder 2 ways from volvo. A random cut key an d lock, which the keys would have to be programed so the transponder would be recognized by the immobilizer and allow the car to start. Or You can order the lock made to the key code for the VIN. then your keys will work.

Having metal in the key slot will turn the chime on, nothing to do with ignition.

Your key does have a transponder. A non working transponder will not let the engine start, key still works. Same with the brake pedal switch, needed to activate the starter.

You will need to remove the plastic around the steering wheel to gain access to the lock. You may find a broken piece of metal between the steering wheel and the lock. Do NOT attempt to take the lock apart! NO, NO.

“…. Do NOT attempt to take the lock apart! NO, NO…”

I’m curious as to why not.

Only a locksmith can put it back together again. If it is a stuck tumbler, spray it with cleaner. Most of these have been problems with the metal breaking off of the steering column lock and getting stuck behind the lock.

You would certainly want to look into the column lock mechanicals before digging into the tumbler. But I gotta tell you I performed the surgery required to repair worn tumbler innards on my 2003. I found a good video on Youtube that gave me the courage to operate on it and, although there are some critical steps along the way where you have to be carful like making sure you have the key inserted in the tumbler before extracting it from the cylinder, it's certainly possible to DYI.

              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzUduzjR9W4

Note the guy in the video doesn't worry about the tumbers falling lose when he pulls them from the cylinder as he was going to re-key it anyway. If the key is inserted the (spring-loaded tumblers won't go flying.

Read your old post that PNP has been done. The ignition switches do wear out. That problem can be gradual. Battery cables and engine grounds are a couple of other things to check. Suggest cleaning the grounds. That is the easiest solution. With the age of your car, electrical tests of the battery and starter cables are a good idea.
