Do I really need the two rear cans?

Hi, on my 2011 XC 70 T6 , My rear exhaust is rusted out, (surprised that Volvo’s aren’t SS).
One rear resonator fell off and honestly the car is not that loud at all.
Can I replace the Rear exhaust from the and leave off the resonators off?
Will it throw a code or cause other issues?
Thank you.

The gas flow in modern cars is tuned from intake to tailpipe exit.

The odds are steep for modifying this system and coming out with a better result.

I see kids putting aftermarket intake systems on their cars - They may make more noise, but seldom more useful power.

I sometimes laugh at this because the intake in my '96 855R was in front of the radiator bulkhead and was only 2x4 inches. That engine had plenty of power.

      Hi James,
I’m not considering this for more power, noise or any other reason. I’m only consider it because those two rear cans are almost $400.00 each. I can’t find an aftermarket alternative to the Volvo dealer. One of them rusted right off (115,000 miles) and the noise isn’t appreciably louder, so it’s not going to annoy the neighbors. They are a Ford part, but I don’t know from what nor if a Ford dealer would have them cheaper.
If parts are going to run me close to a grand, I’m tempted to fabricate something that’ll save me 70-80%.
I’m not sure what your intake or a kids intake has to do with my question other than you’re possibly reading way to much into it.
      Thanks.
      Chris

Removing mufflers after the cat will not cause a code. Just remember, some back pressure will still be needed to keep the system efficient.

      Thank you!
I will Probably just stick to how Odin and Volvo intended, But boy would leaving off those two resonators save a bundle.
Wouldn’t the turbo and cat offer enough back pressure?

On a side note, it’s amusing to see them stamped FoMoCo. Maybe should look into the Fords parts bin, they might be a little cheaper?
      Thanks again,
      Chris

Is there anything left of the old mufflers ? If so look through them and see if there are baffles inside. If not, a straight pipe will work fine.

Since originality isn't an issue, you can look up a universal muffler that will fit. Walker has a look up at https://www.walkerexhaust.com/universal-muffler-search.html. I'm sure there are others. There are also universal bends and elbows available.

If you are near an old school auto parts store where they still have physical parts books they can show you dimensioned drawings of a large range of parts. They might even have a listing for the rear muffler.

The difference in performance in any case will not be noticeable.
