2007 V40 stuck in neutral S40-V40 2007

My neighbor's '07 V40 is stuck in neutral and their (non)Volvo shop says 'gearshift lever and housing, interlock solenoid, and gear shift blind are all shot' to the tune of $1200. They are giving up on the car and say I can have it for $200.

Questions:
1) is there a way to get it out of neutral so it can be driven home ?
2) what is your best guess on what it will take to fix it ?

Thanks
Greg

Are you sure it is stuck in "N"? And not a loose axle? If you shift to "P", does that work?

      Hi Klaus,
Will says the shift lever is stuck in N and can't be shifted to P. Also, the key will not come out of the ignition switch. Not a great failure mode but if the car won't move...

More information - I went over to look at the car and Will said that the 'little plastic piece' around the shift lever broke and got all cross ways. He tried to get it out but... I think the problem has been identified.

Yep. That broken part will do it.

If it were a part of the shift/lock hardware/software, then disconnecting the battery will allow the shifter to move to P and key removal.
