I have a 2008 XC70. Body and interior are in decent shape, and the car seems to run and drive ok. However, the older it gets, the more I have to sink into it. Most recently, I replaced a VVT solenoid, as I was getting a CEL with "Cylinder 5 misfire" readings. After the mechanic diagnosed and fixed this, the CEL came back on weeks later...this time, with a p0012 code. The car has 193K miles on it.
I tried listing the car on both Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for $4200 or best offer. The offers that came back, were $900, $975, and $2800. I dismissed the first two offers, and let the highest offer come take a look at the car. Needless to say, it didn't go well. He complained that the box for the power seat control on the driver's seat was loose, and whined about the CEL. In this same conversation, he called himself a "stickler" for used cars...but shows up in a clapped-out 93' Lexus, so I'm not sure about his comment. He wanted to haggle more; I told him to have a nice day.
I guess my question is this. What is a fair price for this car, with this code, and this amount of miles? Was I asking too much? Too little? Should I have just taken the $900, and called it a day?
I'm lost.

I have a 2006 xc70 that i bought for a thousand dollars. It had an obvious broken driver's side suspension coil and the windshield was cracked. I figured another thousand for those repairs and that worked out. So the car was into me for two thousand and some. The car came with a complete set of winter tires and a set of summers all mounted on wheels.
I now have a car with a blown head gasket and a broken radiator and bad brakes. I decided to let my local mechanic have a go with the radiator so that I could focus on the head gasket job [yet to do]. That is going to cost me six hundred. So the car is now into me for about three thousand. I am pretty certain the brakes will cost another thousand.
I am moderately competent with tools, etc., but I am working outside and the weather is not cooperating at the moment so I have set back the head gasket job. I might get encouraged to do the brakes if the head gasket job goes well.
How did you make out? I figure I would have to get at least four thousand to get my money back. If I get some driving out of the car I consider that as a part of the values involved. I don't expect to get all of my investment back but would like to get at least two thousand next spring or summer.

After all was said and done, I listed it on Craigslist for $4,200, and received full asking price. The guy that purchased it, was doing so for his wife. She had previously owned a V70R, which was wrecked in an accident. According to the husband, she simply “wanted another red Volvo wagon of any kind”. They both test drove the daylights out of it, gave me cash, and drove it directly to their mechanic. Easiest sale going.
To this day, I have no idea what was wrong with the car, other than it possibly needing a timing chain replacement. In retrospect, I probably should have kept it, but I can’t find a decent (local) Volvo mechanic near me, nor am I even slightly mechanically inclined.
What is the mileage on yours? Mine had 193K. Right now, it’s a seller’s market. If you did choose to sell it, maybe try for $2800? If no bites, keep it and work on it when it’s warmer out. I had a ton of lowball offers on mine ($500…$800…), all of which were rejected. One guy and I agreed on a firm price, and after he test drove it, began to complain about the minor stuff (the loose power seat control, the one side view mirror that didn’t fold as quickly as the other one, etc). He wasn’t expecting me to tell him that I had other buyers, and if he was going to lowball me, I’d sell it to one of them. The conversation ended with my driving off from the meeting place, and him standing there. (tl/dr; hold your ground.)

Hi Steve,
There's so many factors to consider such as location, cleanliness, and service records that it's impossible to say. If you want to share your ad, you might get better feedback.
My feeling is that for an '08 XC70 3.2 with 193K miles and looks honest, clean and without CELs, $4200 is a fair starting price. However that code really limits your market and bombs the price.

None of us can give you a "price" for your car. Volvos don't have body rust, but if you live in a salty area you will have rust underneath that makes working on the car troublesome. You have over 190K miles, have you maintained it well and kept records?
A P0012 error is the other VVT solenoid, and I wouldn't buy a car with a CEL on. Is the timing belt current? How about the front suspension?
The seat controls are loose? Why? Is the car clean and polished, including the seats dash and trunk area? Do the tires all match?
Did you go to KBB.com and check their estimate?

We get our cars from our independent Volvo guy. He knows when one of his customers is ready to sell, he gives us a call. the last Volvo we bought from him, we were not even looking, but it was a great deal and he knows the cars history. We unloaded the worst of the ones we had and uprgraded to the 2010 XC90.
We have an 08 XC 70 and love it, rides like a dream with 265,000
