Starter motor tired? 850 1995

Hi, my '95 855 w/225K sometimes doesn't start but I hear a fast spinning noise and the engine's not turning over. I turn the key to off, the spinning noise stops, I try it again, and the engine starts. Would this be the pinion spinning while not engaging with the flywheel?
I think I need a new solenoid or starter...probably both what with 225K miles?
Thanks for any advice, people.
Duke

Get ready to replace the starter. Don't forget to remove the ground from the battery!!

The solenoid can be 'repaired', but a new starter is cost effective.

Not a starter expert so hopefully others will chime in. Interestingly, my 95 850’s starter started acting up at about the same mileage. My starter behaved a little differently though. When the car was warm it wouldn’t start sometimes. Wouldn’t turn over. Cold it would start. Think the solenoid was getting stuck when hot. Ended up replacing the entire starter because of the high mileage.

Thanks for your input, JWalker. I'll be getting a new starter.

In the meantime you could carry a broomstick and a mallet to apply a jarring force to the starter when it acts up. Better than trying/waiting for it to engage AND you'll get some pretty funny looks from the normal folk in the grocery store parking lot, AMHIK.

        Best of luck,
        Will
