TRANNY FLUID LEVEL TOO HIGH V70-XC70

Bought the car used 2 years ago. Drained and refilled with same amount with Aisin fluid. Have tried to check the level several ways: with cold engine, with warm engine and cycling thru all the gears as prescribed.
No matter which way I do it it is always about an inch over the full mark = too much fluid? And the dipstick says do not overfill. So obviously the previous owners level was too high.

Am thinking of draining about 1/2 a litre to get it closer to where it should be.

Granted the dipstick is not only hard to get at but difficult to read, as fluid seams to creep up the dipstick when I inset it and then try to get an accurate reading (or is this because its got too much fluid).

Any thoughts.?

The only time I ever recorded a too high on my car(s) is when the engine had been sitting overnight and not running while checking.

    Never bother checking when cold.

With the dipstick always wet, ATF is getting up the dipstick tube. This is serious over fill. You need to remove at least 1 -2 quarts.

Personally, I would dump the sump with a cold, not started, engine. Be prepared to catch 4-5 quarts. Then fill with 3 quarts, heat up the tranny and check the level. Being 1/2 quart low is not a problem.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

Thanks will follow to a T.

Another issue. Recently replaced the thermostat housing - had been running with a stuck open for several weeks so colder then optimal. Now with new thermostat is great. But, occasionally the 'transmission needs service light' comes on now. Any way they could be related to thermostat? or fluid level?

What I'm hoping for is to see a nice crisp line on the dip stick - same as you get on the motor oil.
But, all I am seeing is fluid all over it.

Do you remember how much fluid you replaced when you did the drain and fill? Most people report that it should take ~3.5 qts, give or take a smidge. You could try draining a bit at a time, as you are considering, and see if you can get a good reading on the stick, or you could completely drain the sump and refill starting with about 3-3.25 qts. and work up from there.

Car runs fine and shifts well.
Am getting intermittent 'transmission needs service' light
Could this just be a notice for fluid change required - or perhaps overfilled in my case?
