Valve noise/chatter V70-XC70 2007

A week after my C30 got rear ended by a Toyota Tundra at 70 MPH, I picked up a clean 07 XC70 with 125K on it. Had an issue with the vacuum pump for the brakes, That is now fixed. The problem is that the valve tick noise is twice as loud at idle compared to my wife's 06 XC70 with the same mileage as the new one.

So, could this be the classic oil pickup tube seal leaking resulting in low oil pressure (haven't checked yet), or something else?

BTW, the C30 took a square hit on the rear bumper, the back and side glass blew out, and the right side distance between the front and back wheel was 2 inches shorter than the left. It still drove though! The Tundra had a scratch on the bumper. That was a great car!

One of our 850s had a bit of lifter noise upon start up when my daughter was 2000 miles away and stretched the oil change a bit.

An oil change stopped the lifter noise a in a day or so.

When I buy a used car - unless I am SURE that the car had proper maintenance - I cut the oil change interval in half for two oil changes. This applies to time as well as mileage.

I gave it Klaus C's high RPM (Grandma drove it) tuneup followed by two oil changes. The noise is now gone. The previous owner of the car was told by a shop that it needed a new transmission as it would shudder under acceleration. Without looking the car over or driving it, I told the seller, "I'll be nice and offer you $1K" He took the offer and had it trucked home. I got lucky, the trans was fine... had a bad right front half shaft. I'm putting the new one in now. Yes, previous owner was going to have it hauled off to the junk yard.

Sounds like it was a sludge issue. Good call on the transmission! Sounds like you got yourself a really good deal. As you probably know, 2006's and 2007's are best years for that body style XC70.

Because you have hydraulic lifters, probably no damage is happening. Have you changed the oil yet? Please use 100% synthetic, it will help dissolve any dirt.

And, yes, the injectors make a lot of noise too.

Depending on how seldom the previous owners drove the car for the last 2 years, you may want to perform a high rpm 'tune up' after the oil has been changed.

Keeping it running is better than buying new
