Slight oil leaks V70-XC70

This is a "sludge motor" that previous owner had the oil changed and suggested an oil change was not needed? However the filter was not and appeared to be 100K+!

Thinking I may go with Shell Formula 5W-30 conventional oil as a flush? THen returning to Synthetic shortly!

In addition thinking about Liqui Moly motor saver from FCP Euro to take care of seepage at front and rear main seals.

Fram full synthetic 5W-40 is doing quite well and leaks appear to be improving?
WAG, leaking one quart /2500 mi.

Of course, I know replacing the seals would be the correct repair but maybe???

BTW - You did well picking up a 2007 XC. 2006’s or 2007’s are supposed to be the best years of that body style. Those are the years I would target. Might still. Scotty Kilmer on you tube says the 2007 XC is the last of the indestructible Volvos. Not that he is an Oracle….😏

Have you used Liqui Moly motor saver before? Curious about it. Does it have a good reputation? My daily driver (work car), a 2017 VW Alltrack is approaching 60k so beginning to think about engine maintenance/products. When the weather warms and I have recovered sufficiently from wrist reconstruction surgery I plan on changing the plugs, air and cabin filters. Might consider other products if they aren’t snake oil.

Jwalker recent experience on the XC70 has been encouraging! In less than 200 miles my front seal is no longer spraying an oil film on the timing belt.

However I observed a large deposit of oil near the transmission cooler, witness marks on the cooler indicated leakage! Replaced with Fel Pro cooler seals and road tested 40 miles, OE seals were 35mm over compressed.

I do like this car and have a bevy of projects this Spring! More importantly my wife loves it, auto and heated seats!

More on the Liqui Moly MS, I have used a few of their other products successfully so I have high hopes?!

I'm going to give it 400 to 500 miles as suggested in their Video. After 200 miles I see evidence of the front seal leakage so maybe the mixture is rejuvenating that seal as well as a rear cam seal?

Honestly, I have my doubts but who knows with an abused engine?
Tom

Thanks to both, last night my search did not find Synthetic formula 20W-30, showed up today at Grainger but can be ordered!
!
PO blew the engine, his installers replaced it with 100K+ salvage motor. I am making good progress with Timing belt, WP, PCV, general service more to come this Spring!

Really liked that comment about "sealing up on its own" with Synthetic oil!

Thanks guys!

Oops, another late-night typing error!

Ordered 5W-30 at Grainger today, not found at Oregon Ohio Wal Mart!

I really do appreciate all the help from BB members. Especially Klaus!

No to 20W30! 5W30 at the thickest, 5W20 if you live north of the Mason/Dixon line.

Don't bother with 'conventional oil' and use 5W30 full synthetic. Still reasonably priced at Walmart. Synthetic oil will help clean up sludge and expect to flush the oil at the 2,500 mile mark along with filter. And use a Mann filter, they work! Then watch for leaks, small ones should go away on their own.

A hard leak will not be stopped as the seal is no longer in the proper position or worn out. Clean up the oil best you can and watch it for additional leaking.

Do the glove test and if it fails, replace the PCV plumbing. You do not want more stress on the seals.

How many miles on your car? Using 1 quart oil in 2500 miles isn’t too bad if it is a high mileage car.

I concur. Try a flush then run synthetic and see what happens. With time, synthetic will clean and rejuvenate the seals to some degree. Perhaps enough to stop the leaks?? Certainly worth a shot - IMO.

Switching to synthetic Mobil 1 ATF in my 850’s PS system stopped a rack seal leak. FWIW - The rear camshaft seal is pretty easy on an 850. Not sure about your car. Is either the rear cam seal or front cam seal leaking? The front is more difficult but doable. Or is it definitely the crankshaft seals leaking?
