camshaft sealant gasket very expensive V70-XC70 2006

I just went to the local Volvo dealer online and it seems that the cost of the sealant for the camshaft housing lid on this 2006 xc70 is close to two hundred dollars! That would be about one fifty US. Is there an effective alternative at a reasonable price somewhere? I am just about to change the head gasket and am looking forward to what will be needed once I remove the camshaft.

Hey ... what's up with that pricing from everyone!

Is there a difference in engine heat or the oils that they are trying to keep in more so than any other engine?
What bad design warrants stuff like that?
Even NASA's costs is more down to earth than that!
"O" rings work on rocket ship boosters in the vacuum of space and with sun exposures!

Are the synthetic oils having a problem or must it be only the "new idea" of the Volvo company again?
Ford was there once!
Money grubbers taking advantage of the crazy worlds of near free plastic money or some crypto bargaining gone nuts!

Shortage of R&D funding and sourcing is needed?
We are going to be in the news as a "poor consumer" all right!
Someone those that have to put up with that are going to go to electric cars faster than ever!

This is not by accident, but a change in the "caressing love affair" with cars, as we have known it!
I see the future of Going with those virtual goggles and having cleaner hands! (:-)

Your dealer is seriously inflating prices. Proceed with caution there.

Seems many folks have had great success with Loctite 518 and Permatex 518XX (the XX denoting the size of the tube).

I've also read that Loctite 510 is the real deal, same stuff as in the Volvo tube.
All of the above are available for 14-20 US doll-hairs.

I would think there are other anaerobic sealers for less $’s that would work just fine. I remember using a generic brand from the auto parts store to seal the oil sump on my son’s Saab. I believe Gasket Maker might be one of those brands??

Hi Marlin,

I just paid $59.90US to ipd for a tube of the stuff. After shipping it will run me close to a hundred CAN. Better than the original quotes to me but still pretty high. I trust the quality of ipd products however.

Bob

Does Volvo have a spec for the sealant ? I can't imagine that everyone that works of Volvo, Audi, etc. coughs up $150 for sealer.
