Reliability of B5254T2, 2.5L cylinders V70-XC70 2007

I copied this from FCP's site and thought others might have experience? Or opinions?

"That leaves the 2.5-liter blocks with very thin cylinder liners—so thin in fact that they crack"

I'm thinking that if Volvo had such a problem that it could have been corrected by 2007?

Currently mine is performing quite well with no intention of HP increase!

I have been on this site for 21 years and never read anything about this issue.

I drove a '96 855R for 11 years and never had any issues with this car that was 17 years old when I traded it in.

I am sure that iof volvo had any engines that had issues such as this they would have corrected them quite quickly.

Volvo and owners found that cracking could occur when the engines were tuned. This is why they reduced the capacity by thickening the cylinder walls by reducing the size of the bore on T5 versions. Lower spec versions don't normally have problems if they are looked after and the cooling system is working as it should.

I feared this with my 2004 V70 AWD, after reading several posts on various boards, before removing the head. However, my conclusion is that the problem is limited to 2.5L engines in the "R" version that has around 300hp.

Well, thanks for those reassuring posts! We have a Charlotte trip coming up and I was concerned?

All cylinders were over 150 psi. No blowby and vacuum at the oil fill!

Interesting. I have never heard of 'cracked' cylinder liners. In fact, all I have ever seen are cylinder liners with the original machine marks at 200K miles! Granted, I have only seen cylinders from 2.3 and 2.4 engines, but the 2.5 should also be just a robust.

If I remember correctly, the 2.5L that FCP tore down had been abused, badly. The oil ports were clogged with dried up oil and the engine had overheated (coolant leak). In any case, the liners would have worn down to the aluminum alloy and the blowbye would have been tremendous - similar to having no rings.

I haven't heard about cracked 2.5L blocks, but did find a related item
while going through Volvo FAQs:

Volvo says:
When doing a compression test, unplug the main fuel relay fuse which disables
the fuel pump, injectors and ignition, so that you don't wash the cylinder
bores out with gas and maybe damage the rings and bore.
Also that un-burned fuel is no good for the cat converter.

Cheers, Bill
