Out of gas at 70 miles left! V70-XC70 2007

I just finished reading posts similar to my issue! XC 70 is 50 miles from home after 5 days in NC, so not expecting this! I had replaced the fuel pump and sending unit 2 months ago, wondering if I may have had an installation problem?

Also, I had to make a 90 degree turn and within 1+ miles the warning light came on and was DOA! My thinking was about the saddle tanks caused a loss of pressure. From that turn?

Prior to the FP replacement the light would come on at 50 + miles and would continue to run!

I thought I had a reasonable safety factor at 70 miles left.

The real way to avoid a replay is to keep at least a 1/4 of a tank or more.

When we travel to Minnesota from Massachusetts we stop for lunch and fill up and also fill up at the end of the day.

This policy averages out the fuel prices in various states. Never run low in New York, near the highway, the prices can be ridiculous.

I also like to have enough fuel to withstand a long traffic snarl or a construction delay.

The longest delay we have encountered was 1 hour while traveling to Sasketchewan.

Luckily the traffic man indicated to us to shut off our car!

Thanks to both of you and I was fortunate that Gene McCutchen, retired farmer, could help us out!

I believe a combination of a sharp 115 degree turn with slight downward angle resulted in running out. TG that my wife will not stay mad forever for my error!

Yesterday I was able to test the warning light function (alone!) and it illuminated @ 60 miles on flat land. Continued home dropping to 45 miles and doing a $73 fill up.

Really good news is that our Charlotte trip resulted in over 30 mpg from Fort Chiswell to Charlotte! Overall trip average was 27.5!

The miles remaining is computer generated. If you are getting 30mpg and the light comes at 60 miles, that means that you have "2" gallons left. But, if your mpg drops to 25 or even 20, you are going to be in a pickle :)

Yes, a hard turn might move a gallon to the wrong tank and it does take a while for the 2 tanks to level out, that would leave you with 1 gallon - oops!

I have run out of gas at the gas station pump. That resulted in multiple misfire codes until I cleared them!

Thanks Klaus, well that 30 mpg was essentially downhill to Charlotte, and we averaged 27+ mpg for the entire trip. Good to know that warning light works on flatlands.

After a trip to Sandstone Falls in WVA it became apparent that small turned rotors will need to be replaced with 320 mm and ceramic pads, FCP parts delivered today but caliper brackets are too short!

IPD has these but are pricy! Any other options? Anyone?

If you have 16 inch wheels, the 320 rotors will not fit anyway. Send what you got back to FCP. 305 rotors are larger than what I had on my 1998 V70R!

I did go to ceramic pads and slotted rotors on the R, plenty of stopping power. But in hilly country like W VA, I liked to downshift to 3 or 2. It's more fun that way and keeps my foot off the brake pedal.

Even going down Pike's Peak was no problem. 2nd gear worked wonders!!

Great advice from you, Klaus! Seems I need advice using something other than a "Rock crusher with a hand shaker"? Thanks again,320 mm's box up for Monday!

Thank you, Bill, good advice about the container! Will do some research on the fuel level sensor. Actually, had a little trouble installing the new pump (passenger side).

hi rolyak

start using your trip odometer to run around with a low tank until you
fix/adjust or replace the fuel level sensor.
keep a small container of gas in the trunk as insurance.
