From P to R I get this noise V70-XC70 2006

Hi all,

I have an XC70 AWD 2006, with 290K Km.

Recently, I noticed that when I shift from P to R, and of course the brake pedal is pushed, I get this sound.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/s6spgxne5fzwlbq/VID_20220917_141130.mp4/file

Any ideas on what can generate it?

Thank you,
Alex

I can't listen to your files but in our '08 V70, going into reverse caused a grinding noise from the front passenger (right) side. Turned out to be both the dogbone motor mount on the top near the coolant reservoir, and especially the motor mount just under the coolant reservoir. The rubber in it had collapsed and was allowing metal to metal contact of the mount when the engine torqued in that direction while in reverse.

Hi folks,

Eventually, I took sometime to look under the hood, and it was the most stupid of the things the Volvo mechanic did after the car was there for its every two years inspection:

Look at the images, and this is what you can get after you pay 150 C$/h for labor :(

Hi,

I kept watching the ten second video over and over and looking for the wheel to jerk when you shifted but that never happened for me.

The engine makes plenty of noise for the camera though but I assume you were trying to demonstrate a clunk or clanging during the shift.

In this kind of scenario I’m suggesting maybe it’s a CV joint of a drive shaft you are hearing.
We didn’t get it so you might want to edit in a little more length of video before you shift.

What sort of sounds will it do when you go from drive and back up into reverse is another good test to find slack in a driveline.
The rocking of the drive line is one sound only.
With you having a FWD or AWD for that matter, is not a friendly sound.
The other is a clunk while turning corners at a slow speed.
Turning up into a drive way approach is one that truly tests the steering knuckles and the suspension geometry of struts and mounts.

Speaking of mounts, the transmission will twist the engine on its mounts so you might be getting one worn out since 2006? I have read that it’s a common thing to expect.
It might be time for a date with a 2X4 piece of wood.
Women, from where I was raised, were measured width wise, by the length of an axe handle. (:-)
I married well away from that state!

The park mode usually has to pull a claw or pin to disengage the parking mode on automatics.
So, you might hear the mechanical affect of that motion only but if the idle is too high then that might be excessive and harsh.
I’m not familiar with the idle speed on these cars but the video does seem loud and possibly a fast idle that should be computer controlled.
In saying that, I would ask what could be the cause for a too fast of an idle?
Does something think it’s colder and needs to idle faster?

I will leave you those things to think about.

Phil

Hi Phil,

Thank you for your response.

Today, I managed to take a video from the interior of the car, I hope it helps to better understand the type of noise I hear when I shift to R.

Thank you!

Hi again,

I had your post hit my email box this morning or maybe yesterday because I don’t let it pester me with notification sounds.
I’m surprised that you haven’t seen more responses from more people that drive and maintain theses cars.
They are newer than my 240’s but I don’t know how many have landed in the hands of owners that do their own work on them.
A person named Klaus helps a lot of peoples cars. Dave Stevens out of Canada is very thoughtful in his post. Follow them for future advice.

Doing the video I’m sure will help attract more attention so I’m hoping that it will help you.
The second one is a lot better in that we actually here that knocking noise. With you being in the drivers seat does match up to where most of us get our information also.

It definitely repeats itself nicely to say that the engine is shifting it position on it mounts in the opposite direction of driving forward. For me that’s a good clue.
When that happens the months are a top suspect along with things attached to the engine like exhaust pipes or lines.
Have you had any work done on the car recently that may have moved a component closer to a body point?
With this thought I used the idea of use having a date with a 2x4 or a pry bar to wiggle the engine on it mounts. Especially in the opposite direction of torque or twist to the direction of the wheels rotating going forward.
You may have to get an assistant to put the car directly into reverse and out while observing under the car. Check on the back of the engine and each of mounting points that have rubber joints.
I have read that a upper mount near the front of the car goes soft rather regularly and it’s not hard to change. I will hope for you that it’s that mount.

Can you tell if the sound is coming from your feet or up higher behind the dash? Left or more right?
If it’s low and in the center then that area is going to be harder to see from above.

Make sure that when ever you are running the engine that you can keep the car from moving!

From what I can tell from the video it does not sound internal to the transmission or engine because it varies so much and only in reverse.
The noise of the engine itself seems a little higher than normal but with a high mileage vehicle, that is always an area of contention.

Hope you find it.

Phil

I did indeed, the car did a Motor Vehicle Inspection at Volvo, I asked them to replace the timing belt, and with that they found the cam seals leaking, so they changed them too.

They also found the tie rod end driver side to be replaced, but I had another mechanic to replace it because the labor cost at the dealer is crazy high.

The noise definitely comes from the same side, and it sounds to be behind the wheel, but I will double check to see if I can identify where exactly.

Unfortunately during the last months I have been fighting a sciatica, and I cannot do those works myself, very sad. :(

Thank you guys,
Alex

Gotta agree with Machine man. It sounds like something, like an exhaust component, is contacting the car body/chassis due to engine torque. You may need an assistant to hold the brake with the car in reverse while you look around for that contact.

To expand on the previous 2 posts, if it were my car I would first check the upper torque mount. Bear in mind I in don’t have direct experience with your model, only with 850’s. I believe you have a similar mount in your car. What typically happens is the rubber in the mount deteriorates and cracks allowing the top of the engine to shift when applying torque to the engine. Yes, it is a fairly easy replacement (at least on 850’s).

You can visually check the rubber in the mount. Agreed - Enlisting a friend to shift gears while you watch the mount (and engine in general) is another good diagnostic tool.

With that many kms on your car that top mount is probably due for replacement.

Will I buy another Volvo??? We'll see....e
