cleaning oil separator S40-V40 2007

2007 S40 2.4i, 183,000 miles, uses a lot of oil for a modern car, a quart every 1500 miles. After driving it on the highway and coming to a stop there is a noticeable oil smell. It does nor appear to be leaking anywhere. The back side (firewall) of the head is dry and so is the splash panel underneath.

I'm going to try cleaning the oil separator and see if that helps.

Any tips on how to do it and what I'll need for o-rings or seals ?

Thanks
Greg

If your car has never had the PCV system serviced then it more than likely needs it by now (183,000 miles). Also, being that the car is an NA, it probably has a vacuum control diaphragm integrated into the oil separator box. When that diaphragm gets all coked up and ruptured the only fix is to replace the box.

Have you performed a rubber glove test to see if the crankcase is being evacuated properly?
