Where Did My Boost Go ? 850 1997

1997 850 GLT (LPT) 200K miles

Car is down on power, acting like my old NA 850.
I can hear what sounds like boost pressure leaking from some where when I am accelerating.
Not seeing any bad/blown hoses from the turbo to intercooler to TB intake.
Do intercoolers even go bad? I'm see a small hole with a smudge of oil around it at the bottom low point of the intercooler. Weep hole ???

I attached a vacuum/pressure gauge to the vac. tree (no stock "boost" gauge) and I get a reading of around 18" of vac. at idle, 9" at cruise & 0" of vac. at WOT, normal?
Is there an easy way to attach a gauge to measure actual/real boost pressure ??

Sort of sounds like the wastegate is stuck open, but I don't think that's it.
Can't reproduce the sound unless under load (driving).
Will fabricating a way to manually add some low PSI to the TB intake hose be a viable way to listen for a leak ???

What are the most likely places I should be looking at.

Thanks
Peter

    Hi Peter,

What happened about your charging thread from a few weeks ago?

If it's resolved, could you provide the results?

the charging issue has yet to be resolved.
still focusing on the cables, so far the neg. battery cable to chassis is OK.

switching my attention now to my slow coolant leak.
noticed during my last oil change that the radiator might be the culprit.
fabricating a way to pressurizing the cooling system with a spare reservoir cap.

      results TBD

Before diving into the radiator - Have you checked the tightness and condition of all of your coolant hoses? Also thoroughly eyeballed your reservoir tank including the bottom?

850 radiator leaks are often in the upper plastic tank and can be difficult to find. My 95 855 GLT's had a subtle crack in the upper tank at the seam on the passenger side. As I remember, that is a common spot for a leak. Another place to check is the neck the where the radiator cap attaches.

I noticed some weepage at the lower tank seam. I'll know more when I get around to pressurizing the cooling system with my custom reservoir cap.
