Can the seal on the headlight assembly be replaced? V70-XC70 2006

Hello All,

I recently purchased a used 2006 V70 FWD non-turbo wagon with 168,000 miles. I noticed the driver's side front headlight assembly is allowing moisture to collect inside the headlight lens. I noticed an impact mark on the front driver's side of the bumper adjacent to the headlight assembly. Some questions:

1) Can you take the headlight assembly apart and just removed the seal/gasket that the headlight lens sits on?

2). If you can't replace the headlight lense gasket/seal, can you just apply a sealant along the edges of the headlight lenses to keep condensation from entering the lens. Thanks to all who reply.

Hugh

Hugh - I would drill a 1/8" hole at the bottom-must part of the headlight shell.

That way the moisture might drain out or the heat of the bulbs might drive the moisture out.

You hight add a smail flap to make this opening one way so that the cooling of the headlight case won't draw moisture in on a damp day.

You could easily make a flap by using a piece of thin plastic and tape it on three sides.

In Emergency Medical Technician training this is called an occlusive dressing - used for a chest puncture to allow air to exhaust from the puncture and stop air from being drawn in, to avoid collapsing a lung.

EMT use baggies for this flap.

If my idea does not work, it can be easily plugged up.

If you haven't fixed your problem yet you could take the circular bulb covers of and leave the car in the sun to allow the interior of the lights to dry out. Drop in a small pack of silica gel in the bottom of each holes and refit the covers. Keep an eye on the packs to check if they get damp. They can be dried out in a warm oven and reused. There are normally very small holes in the underside of the housings but they may not drain any water. You can run a line of sealant around the light. Bumper cover needs to come off or your car I think to remove the unit.
See TRQ video on the Tube.

Can the seal on the headlight assembly be replaced? V70-XC70 2006

Hello All,

In reviewing the replacement headlight assemblies, the original Volvo assembly is $645. An OEM alternative from Valeo is $349.95. Then there is an aftermarket unit from TYC, which is based in Taiwan. I just watched a video where a gentleman in the U.K. was replacing a both headlight assemblies with a "Taiwan Aftermarket" units. I assume they were manufactured by TYC. He mentioned that during the installation, the lenses did not fit into their slots as easily as the original Volvo units. He also commented, and this caught my attention, that there was now a gap between where the plastic bumper ended and the lower portion of the headlight assembly that was not present with the original Volvo headlamps.

My question to all is: Has anyone had an experience with using TYC headlight assemblies? Thank in advance to all who respond.

Hugh

Not positive but I believe you can not replace seal. I think it is a sealed unit. Aftermarket is around $225 and OEM $500, if you can find one.

ipdusa currently has 2006 V70/XC70 Driver (left) side Genuine Volvo halogen headlamp on sale for $538 (today July 15 2023).

Have had good luck with TYC components on other Volvos and ipd endorses TYC quality. However there's no listing in ipd catalog for 2006 XC70 TYC headlamps.

Robert,

Thank you for your reply and advice. You have reduced some of my concern about using the TYC brand of headlight assembly. They are currently available from eEuroparts and RockAuto.com. If the headlight assembly cannot be resealed, I will probably replace both headlight assemblies. The current headlight assemblies appear to be the original units. The prior owner "buffed" them twice using the 3M kit to remove the "yellow" haze that develops over time on the plastic lenses. He did a good job, but they still are not completely transparent, and after 17 years, they will not be getting better with age. Again thank you Robert for your reply.

David,

You are knowledgeable about Volvo headlight lenses. I think you are right, the seal on the headlight assembly cannot be replaced. The Volvo headlight is still available but lists for $675. FCP and eEuro and iPd, Inc. sell the Volvo unit for about $500. They also sell an OEM by Valeo for about $360. Then there is an aftermarket brand called "TYC" which sells for about $200. TYC appears to be made in Taiwan and not China and the reviews are favorable. If my local garage cannot reseal the headlight assembly, I'll probably purchase the "TYC" unit. I did call a salvage yard, but it didn't have any used lenses. I could make additional inquiries.

Thank you for your reply.

Hugh
