Wheels...

2006 xc70- Ocean Race- 17" wheels. My original wheels are shot...cannot be refinished. Corroded and no refinisher will attack them. That leaves me to new wheels. I saw a set from IPD- Pegasus machined wheels....BUT, they only have 3 in stock and will not have more for 6mos to a year. Aside from purchasing used wheels (someone else's problems), and I dislike the silver painted wheel...what are my options.
I went on Tire Rack for wheels under $200 each...quite a few. My local mechanic is skeptical about their wheels ..."Ahh, they are all crap...made in China". What suppliers/ manufactures do you all recommend? I will guess that a portion will suggest the refinished pre-owned from market places or eBay, Any other options?

    Wheels...

Tire Rack wheels are ok as far as integrity.

But two things: One, they're not very appealing (to me, at least). They sell them as something to put a snow tire on, and if you don't mind your car looking different for half the year (snow tire season is sometimes five months where I live), then sure, they work for that.

The bigger issue I have with them is that they corrode SUPER easy. If your factory wheels are corroded, then damn, you're in for a treat with the "Sport Edition" specials from the Rack. I think they paint right over the aluminum. No powder coat base, like quality factory Euro wheels. I have a set on my wife's V60, they look like crap after a few seasons (only one set of tires on them). Now looking for used OEs for when we get new snows next winter.

Anyway, get a set of used factory wheels. Your best bet. If used bothers you, pay up and get new factory wheels. Cheap aftermarket wheels on a nice car = hooptie.

And let's not be hard on stuff just because it's made in China. Aren't some US bound SPAs made in China? I believe all current XC90s are.

I second Bill's suggestion. Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace, find some used Volvo wheels. The fit and quality of an OEM Volvo wheel can't be beat.
Though, depending on where you are, it might not be the quickest turnaround to find a set to your liking. In that case, Tire Rack might be a good choice for quick and easy even if the Chinese wheels are (likely) heavier and weaker than OEM.

    Hi Alan,

In the Boston area there's usually an offering of various Volvo
tires & rims, sometimes just rims on Craigslist.
Better prices than the salvage yards.
    Check in your area.

    Bill
