If all Electrical functions appear normal, try:

On the starter solenoid there are two terminals:

    - One connects the heavy battery cable to a threaded lug. Don't mess with that one for now. And if you do, disconnect the battery first.

    - Next to the large solenoid terminal is a small one-spade terminal / connector and a single thin primary wire. This is the feed wire to the solenoid that triggers the starter circuit. The spade connectors may be corroded and not allowing a connection, after sitting for so long.

Disconnect the spade terminal and clean the male and female contacts. Electronic spray cleaner and then dielectric grease helps, if available.

Reattach the spade terminal and try starting again.

His reply is that he tried bypassing the igntion relay and that the engine would crank but would not start. Next step?

If ignition is being bypassed, the engine won't start while cranking.

Plugs firing? Injectors firing? Fuses checked and cleaned?

Also, there is an antenna ring that encircles the ignition switch on the steering column; the chipped ignition key talks with the antenna ring. If not in sync, car will not start.

The good news is that the engine cranks over. Now, must follow up by chasing down above items.

Let's try to narrow down or describe the symptoms before attempts at troubleshooting begin.

What year and body style S60? Automatic or manual transmission?

Does the alarm system and remote locking/keyless entry operate normally?

When ignition key is turned to start position, are there any sounds, clicks, noises, vibrations of any sort? Do lights (dash, headlights, tail lights) turn off when key is turned?
