Hello All,

I have a 1999 V70 AWD XC Wagon. I can't recall if the cigarette lighter electrical plug (12 Volt socket just to the left of the gear shift selector) is illuminated at night when you turn the headlights on. I seem to recall it was illuminated by a green colored ring. The center console has the plastic wood veneer which is slowly cracking and separating. I am loath to remove the center console because of the damage I will cause. Before I risk such damage, I want to see if I can confirm, if this plug is illuminated at night. It is is, I have to replace the bulb and I will have to be very careful in removing the console.

Hi Hugh, My 850 had the illuminated green ring when lights are on. Went out after about 20 years. Decided it wasn't worth the effort fixing as the plastic was now pretty brittle. Drove it another 10 years, and it didn't bother me at all. With me, I seem to damage other things trying to make things perfect. Food for thought.

You are right that when you try to fix one thing, you will break another. From the responses I have received below the 12 Volt socket is illuminated. With the present cold weather, I will wait until the spring/summer so the plastic console will not be as brittle when I take it apart.

Robert DIY has a video on replacing the gear shift indicator light, which requires removal of the center console:

While the center console is removed, the front power socket bulb and rear console bulb can also be replaced. Yes, the front socket bulb has a green lens filter.

The plastic console parts become brittle over 25 years and cracking can be expected when removing parts.

I'm a different Robert S., but I too find Robert DIY videos to be very informative and useful.

What motivated me to finally replace the 2000 V70 shift indicator bulb, was my daughter (her car at the time) was using her cell phone flashlight in the dark to see what gear the car was in...

Being as Robert DIY is Robert Singer, I often wonder if you are actually him? I have a bulb for the gear indicator in my glove box. Mine hasn't blown as a few months after I got the car it lit up! Has a mind of it's own but doesn't want to stay on for long. I will have to follow Robert's video and get it fixed.
