Shocks and Anti-roll bars-labor savings??? 850

Hello,

I have a 94 850 Turbo Wagon. After 120,000 miles, I need to replace the shocks and a brake shudder at higher speeds leads me to believe new bushings are in order also. My question is this: IPD says it's 3-4 hours labor to replace the anti-roll bars. This is a bit steep for me. How much savings in labor could I expect if I had the roll bars replaced at the same time as the rest of the suspension work (shocks and bushings)?

Thanks in advance,
Peter Courtney

The brake shudder could be bad rotors, not the sway bar bushings. Could you describe the brake shudder? When you say replace shocks are you talking the rear shocks or the front strut inserts? If you really mean the shocks (rear) there is no over lap of time. The front strut insert can be replaced without dropping the subframe so there is not a whole lot of over lap time on that job either.

    Hi Peter,
I have a '98 V70, so we're talking similar vehicles. I had an independent shop here in Cincy do it, and it cost about $200 for the job ($50 of which was for an alignment, so I guess we're looking at about $50/hour). I don't mind spinning wrenches at all, but the front sway looked to be somewhat difficult to me. That's not to say you shouldn't try it; I was concerned when the instructions said "Make sure to loosen your power steering rack, otherwise the front bar won't go in." That turned me off, but I honestly don't know how difficult it would have been had I done it myself. I believe Bay 13 at volvospeed.com has instructions on how to do it. May want to check there first. Hope that helps.

      Thanks for all the responses,

IPD confirmed that there is not much overlap on the jobs.

As far as the brake shudder, it only occurs at higher speeds (65+) when I hit the brakes fairly hard. Around town, I never see it, even with hard braking. Also, normal braking on the highway doesn't pose a problem. It's a light shake in the steering wheel that I notice but the passengers don't. I thought that I had had the rotors done already, but I can't find the receipt so probably not.

      Thanks again,
      Peter Courtney
