The speaker that fails - DO THIS! A happy story :-) V70-XC70 1998

Hiya,

just (2 minutes ago) came in from my garage where Ive replaced the driverside door speaker. It has been failing, on and off, with an annoying habit of starting to work at higher volume.

I went to my volvodealer and got a replacement speaker, $34, and then started working on the doorside.

First i removed the torque screw in the middle of the doorside, hidden under a bit of plastic. Use the torquekit that comes with the volvo in a small lether (black) container!

Then i removed the black plastic bit where the mirror is. Eaysily done.

Then i removed the plastic around the dooropener, dont forget this bit, you will be confused why the doorside wont come of later if you forget that detail :-)

Then i pryed the doorside along the side all around, until the plastic fasteners came off. It involved some brute force, but i actually didnt brake anyone!! Good on me..

Then with a harsh jerk and push upwards it came loose. Then its all about taking out the cables attached (very gently..) and remove the side all along. The speaker comes off easily with another torquescrew and then everything in reverse order.

All works fine, im SURE that its not the wiring in either of your cases, its the speaker and its magnet that detaches from the papercone.

Go do it!

Sorry for the poor english, im swedish :-)

Regards,

Niclas(@soderlund.org)

As the weather went cold here in loverly northern NJ, I had exactly the same problem, except intermittent in one or the other or both speakers. It sounded like you were listening to the speakers with tin cans over your ears - blasting the radio would pop them back so that they sounded ok.

Wednesday, the dealer first replaced the head unit (SC816) claiming the symptoms all pointed to typical problems with the connections behind the volume control as per the following link.

http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=160228

Drove off, everything fine for a few hours and the same problem both sides. Back the next morning and the dealer replaced both speakers and everything works. The same mechanic confirmed that the speakers are often the problem as per the original post in this thread. All fixed now and waiting to see if everything stays OK.

I'm having the same problem with the driver's door speaker. I'll try replacing it.

Thanks,
