driver's side wiper arm 850 1995

Hello again Gentlemen:
Ever since I bought my pre-owned 850 I have had an ongoing problem with my driver's side wiper arm. I know about the Bay 13 fix and tried that. It only seemed to worsen the problem. Originally the wiper blade would not contact the
far upper left portion of the windshield. Now in addition to that the arm seems to be slipping on it's spindle. The passenger side arm is fine but the driver's side now begins to rise up into my view as each swipe goes by. My question is, will a new arm fix this problem or do I need a whole new assembly which runs about $150 from the dealer? Without checking it yet, it would seem that the knurling is worn on either the spindle or inside the arm.

Thanx!

driver's side wiper arm - 2 spindle fixes 850 1995

Mr. Detail - I have had similar slipage problems on a couple of 740s that I have owned.

The arm lifting off the windshield is a fix as described by the other posts.

The slippage is another matter. Indeed, you can probably get a new arm and fix the slippage properly. Just be sure to clean the knurled portion of the spindle with a STIFF brush, like a small steel wire brush. You must remove any of the cheesy metal that has been reamed off of the old arm. This cleaning should be done as part of any fix you choose.

The arms look much too different to swap.

Fix 1 - Add a washer below the nut that holds the arm on. You can do this if the damage to the arm is slight. The washer pushes the arm down on the spindle. This has worked on two of three instances that I have suffered.

Fix 2 - Wrap some fine wire around the knurled portion of the spindle. This increases the diameter of the spindle allowing it to fill the oversize hole in the arm. I had good results with copper wire because it is crushed a bit when you tighten the nut. Some othe material might work as well.

Lastly, prevent slippage by clearing your windshield of ice before using your wipers. And ALWAYS shut your wipers off before you shut off your engine. Frozen wipers put a lot of stress on the connection between the arm and the spindle. Starting your car with the wipers on, or in any location except parked will cause the dust and dirt that has settled on the wiper blade to be scratched across your windshield.

Hello Mr. Detail

Remove the wiper blade and arm from the car. You will have to reform the wiper arm by slightly bending it to conform to the windshield. I recently had to do
this to mine and its been months since its failed. But, don't be surprized if it happens again. Just remember this simple fix. FYI, the arm may be somewhat difficult to remove from the post, but simply apply even pressure and it will eventually work its way loose.

So Kirk, it sounds like you are telling me it is not the whole wiper assembly.
Is this a true statement?

Sorry If my terms got mixed. The Bay13 fix says to tighten the nut that the arm is bolted to. This works occasionally. But, if you remove that 13mm nut the arm will come off. But, the wiper blade will simply be in the way. I would remove that first. Its that arm that holds blade that needs reformed.
Hope thats more clearly defined than the other post. To answer your question,
yes, you will have two separate pieces.

Thanks,
Kirk

Would it work if you switch the arm to the other side ???

Just a though...

I don't think that a switch would work because I believe that the driver's and passenger's side arms are different lengths.
