I just purchased a '94 850 Turbo Wagon that needs a little love. On of the little things that it needs is a new catch strap for the drivers side door. This is the little spring hinge that controls the door opening so that the door does not fly open to its full extension every time you open it, it holds the door back in some preset positions.
Normally, this would be a pretty easy fix. New catch strap from Volvo dealer, $50. Remove door speaker, remove door panel, remove old catch strap, install new one. However, when I went to install the new catch strap, I realized why the old one failed. The mount for the catch strap had broken loose. The point at which the catch strap secured to the body of the car had come undone. A quick call to the Volvo dealer confirmed that this was welded on at the factory and was not as simple as bolting it back in. After further investigation with the Volvo dealer, I found that this is not uncommon.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is this a common problem with 850's or Volvo's in general?
I decided to try and fix it myself with some JB weld since the piece was still secured on 2 sides. I'm not sure if this is going to work, I guess I'll know tomorrow after if cures...
