I am looking at 18" x 7.5" with 215x40x18 tires

I have a 96 850 turbo wagon.

Will these fit, rub...or what?

I can't speak for the rims, but your tires are definitely taller and wider than stock. My 855R has 205-45-17's on it. If you are set on 215's then definitely try for 35 series tires on your 18" rim. You will still be a little taller than stock, but not by much. The ride will be a little harsh, but your speedo should still work and steering should be mostly unaffected except for really tight turns.

why 225?
and what exactly does that 225 mean?
i was thinking 35, too......

225 is in mm, is also the width of the tires. 225 will fit 7.5 rims...the 35 is the thickness of the tire wall, is also a percentage number, meaning it's height is 35% of 225. u can read all about this on tirerack.com's webpage: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/general/sidewall.htm. u can also lookup different tires at this size. btw, this size is an almost perfect height to the stock 205-50-16. i don't believe these tires will rub because european car magazine had a 1997 850R wagon fitted with 225-35-18 on antera 18" rims; and they didn't say anything about rubbing. another site u can try is http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
