How can I tell if I have Remote Central Locking? 850 1997

1987 850 SE with leather, woodgrain and all the trimmings but no remote central locking. When I purchased the car from a Volvo dealer the salesman insisted that it was optional on this model and my chosen car did not have it fitted, however I have found an insert in the service book that makes reference to it including a key number that is different from the basic keys supplied.
In the centre of the dash board is a small fitting that is blank but appears to have wires going to it(would have an LED if car has alarm).
Is there a "black box" somewhere that would indicate whether Remote C/Locking is fitted and I just need to purchase the control?

regards....Valvo

    Valvo,
Well, one good place to start...did you get a key fob with your car? Secondly, there is what others are calling a pyramid thingy that is located on top of the dash, just below the windshield. I believe this is where you said you have a blank insert. If you don't have this either then you don't have ECC as well. The sensor on top of the dash works in conjuction with all the other sensors found in the cabin (behind the vents, inside roof liner etc) to control the Electronic Climate Control. If you have the remote alarm/locking system, this same sensor has a LED on top of it that indicates when the alarm is armed. To answer the other question as to where the receiver is for the alarm/locking system....it is located behind and to the right of the glove box....

      Thanks Tg,
The car does not have ECC or an alarm system or a pyramid thingy however the blank plastic insert appears to have wires going to it (perhaps to make it easier to install aftermarket system?).
The handbook refers to a plain remote central locking system and on a seperate page to a remote/alarm/central locking system also in the service book was another page referring to the plain remote system with a hand written key number on it.
I was hoping the car is equipped with the plain remote system and only the key ring controls were missing.... I'll check behind the glovebox this weekend.

      regards.....valvo

If you had remote locking, you'd have a little pyramidical plastic thingy just behind the windscreen.

If there's nothing, you haven't got it.

How can I tell if I have Remote Central Locking? 850 1995

        Simmon,

The pyramid LED is for the ECC (electronic climate control) not remote central lock. The antenna of the central lock locates, in 95 model, around the door key holes; and in later models, behind the steering wheel (other brickers please confirm this).

That makes no sense. The pyramid is located on top of the dash subject to heating by the sun. There is no way anyone would locate a climate control there. And you wouldn't put just one on top of the dash to control both the drivers and passenger's sides. I seem to remember hearing that the climate control monitors are in the door panels just above the inside door handles.

I am with Simon. The pyramid on the dash is for the Alarm and locks.

The pyramid thingie on the dash has nothing to do with the central locking. It serves two distinctively different purposes. One, it houses a day/night indicator for the ECC system in the form of a light sensor behind the white opaque window, two it houses an alarm indicator in the form of a red led. If the car has neither ECC nor alarm it has no pyramid thingie, but remote central locking is completely independant of the alarm. My car has no alarm, but has ECC, therefore it has a pyramid thingie the red led part of which is not operational. My car also has remote central locking.

In order to check if the car has remote central locking, one can ask Yannis for help. I believe in North American market in '97 all 850s came with central locking (I may be wrong on this). It was certainly the case in '98 with S/V70s, one of which I own. If Yannis says it was an option, you can buy an appropriate key fob on ebay for not very much money and follow the procedures for programming it (look on Bay13 or ask here for those procedures). If you succeed, you have central locking, if not you have either not followed the procedure properly or you did not buy the correct key fob or you do not have central remote locking.

            Hope that helps, good luck.

            Nathan,

I was my msitake not to mention about both LED and the sensor. For ECC model, the plastic pyramid has both LED ans ECC sensor. The LED is an indicator (blinking slowly) as the aftermarket alarm system. Antenna is definitely not there. For MCC model, the plastic pyramid only contains LED. For car without Volvo alarm system, no plastic pyramid installed, just a flat tab. My car was without Volvo factory alarm, and I installed aftermarket alarm along with the plastic pyramid to replace the aftermarket LED. I have the 1995 part catalog, which show the Volvo alarm system including the antenna in the driver side key hole area. I am not sure about the later model.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to break down and get a set of factory manuals.

Nope, no pyramid thingy just flat plastic piece.
Looks like I missed out, this car would have cost $55,000 Aussie dollars when new, for that money you would expect a remote!

Pyramid thingy is climate control sensor, I think, and LED for alarm. Other way is that remote lock cars usually have no lock on the passenger's door handle. Unless it's dealer installed, of course. Also, I don't know about RHD model cars.

On the subject, shouldn't the central locking also lock the fuel filler door?

Seems I ran across that in the manual somewhere but mine isn't locking.

              Fuel Filler Door? 850 1995

Don't think that "locks" per se. Latches with a plastic paw on the door. The switch on the driver's door activates -unlatches - the latch. Nor very secure, they broke it at the gas station, dealer's parts dept. knew exactly what it was, only a couple of bucks. If you have the plastic paw and it's not latching, sounds like the motor or latch is not working.

              Erwin,

Yes, it should lock the fuel filler door. It could be the motor that behind the fuel filler area is broken. You should be able to access the motor mechanism by pulling out the trim panel (behind the fuel filler area) inside the trunk.
