Remote keyless entry unit 850 1997

Hello All,
I just bought a 1997, 850, T-5. The seller did not have either of the remote units. The dealer says that the pn for mine is 9148646. He figured this out from the last 7 digits of my VIN. Will any other types work for this car? I have seen several 9166200 models advertised on e-bay. Will they work on a 97, or just 98-00?

The dealer quotes $94 for a new one!

    Just to confuse you some more: I have a 96 850 and the remote with the top and bottom button arrangement *did not* work with my car, with all due respect to John Scales's message. The remote that works (until I broke it) with my car is the square-ish one with the lock and unlock buttons side by side (and no "panic" written anywhere on it). Apparently Volvo switched over during the 96 model year (I think) and this has caused a great deal of confusion among the E-Bay sellers who get a lot of them returned to them because they don't work.

    So be careful about what you get, and don't be surprised if it don't work!!

      The 1996/97 850 use a two button remote with one large button labelled "Lock/panic" at the top and a smaller button in the center labelled "unlock". It is about 1 3/4 " high and about 1" wide. There are several different remotes so make sure you get this one. They are usually available on ebay for around $35-40. They are very easy to program and you can do it yourself (instructions in vehicle handbook). If you have any difficulty email me and I will take you through it or go to the archives and pull up the instructions.

    shop around, i bet you can get one from other dealers for less money. i believe i saw one at a dealer in the $70's

      Thanks to all who contributed. It looks like I need the 2-button, lock/panic and unlock model. Another dealer told me it was yet another part number. Now there are two for a 97, 850; 9442982 and 9148646.

      They do this to create confusion.
