Power Seat - Different Problem 850 1994

I have a '94 850 Turbo with the power driver seat. The issue is this: The power seat back does not work correctly. It will go down, but if you try and go up it will go about a centimeter and stop. If you repeatedly push the "forward" button you can eventually get it to any position you'd like. Going back everything works normally as expected. Also, the seat bottom moves forward back and up etc, without issue.

Is this a symptom of the famed seat-back cable? or something different...

Since the seatback eventually goes back with repeated pressing of the button, it's probably not the cable. The seat relys on potentiometers in each motor for memory function. It sounds like a problem with the backrest potentiometer or wiring. Could also be as simple as resetting the end limits for the seat. This can be done through the diagnostic link under the hood either manually, or with a scan tool. The manual method is difficult and requires many steps. With the dealers scan tool, it's quick and easy. Plug your diagnostic wire at the socket under the hood into B-6 and read fault codes for the seat, then repost.

Diagnostic wire? I don't have any OBD scanners or anything like that (yet) is this something I can do without that? If not, is there any way to set the end limits without that device?

Thanks in Advance,

the diagnostic sockets are in the engine compartment on passenger side of the radiator. Go to volvospeed.com maintenance bay13 for pics and instructions.
It's a life saver.
I just happen to have exactly the same problem on my '94. Now I know which direction to head in to fix mine.

Sounds like it could be the cable although when mine went, the seat would not move up one bit. I guess a good place to start is the cable to see if that fixes it.
