Suspension On My 1998 Volvo S 70 SE S70

Hello to all.

I have to say that I love this BBS.

I have a 1998 Volvo S70 SE and I’m sure that the SE stands for Sport Edition. Is it my imagination or reality that the ride quality is different? What I mean is, I test driven the base model and the SE model and I noticed that the base rode smoothly over rough roads and the SE was a lot more firm. Could the SE have a sport suspension? If so, how can I confirm this?

Thanks,

Alfredo from Montreal

SE is 'Special Edition,' typically of Canadian origin. It's a T-5 automatic with combination suede seats, a different steering wheel, and other cosmetic touches. (If yours is of Canadian origin, it may still have the centigrade climate control faceplate and the DRL selector is missing.)

The majority of Canadian SE's are not T5s, but rather, have the naturally aspirated engine, and in 98 would have included a sunroof, rear spoiler, fog lights, leather seats, auto trans. and 15" "Spica" alloys. The T5 SE's that year also added power seats with Alcantara inserts as well as wood accents including the steering wheel and shift knob. Wheels were standard 16" T5 alloys. Upgraded sound systems were common to both. Reading the original post, it sounds like the writer has a regular SE, not a T5, and that car shares it's susupnsion with the car below it (base), and the car above it (GLT).

Fomw what I observed the SE's have a few xtras....but has nothing to do with the engine...or suspension....there are S70 SE's, GLT SE's alike.....T5's of course are in a class of thier own...anyhow...I think it has to do with some of the added "goodies"....fog's...sunroof...leather...etc...its like a base model on steroids....hope this helps...also check your VIN and send an email to volvo cust. svc...they should verify as well as the sales sticker/badge on the rear passenger side...should have an SE obviously.

    Alf,

Like everyone stated, SE doesn't stand for " Sport Edition "; instead it stands for " Special Edition ".

As for the ride, anytime you got rims on a car, it will ride different. I
am assuming that when you talked about " base " model, it means the one w/
the 15" wheel cover, right ? ... if so, it will ride different as I used
back the 15" wheel cover on 195/60R15 tires for winter, and was using 17"
"R" rim on 205/45R17 tires for summer ( well ! .. at least until my young
sister destroyed two of the rims a weeks ago when she borrowed my S70 ).
Anyways, I did find the ride totally different when I was riding on those
    nice 17" rims ( Boy ! ... I miss them ! )

    Hope that helps,

I don't think its sports edition but just 'special edition'. Do you have the heated suede/leather seats, heated mirrors and wood trim? My S70 T5 SE has the above, but does not have the sports suspension. I wish it had it though!! Most of the S70 SE's are Canadian, so you won't find too many of them here in the US. Did the SE have bigger wheels = smaller sidewalls?? That would make a firmer ride. There's no way of telling by the VIN, you'll have to look at the springs and struts for the part numbers to see if you got it. I don't know what the numbers would mean, maybe a dealer friend on the board would be able to look it up.

Who says that most of the S70 SEs are...Canadian? S70

Here in the US, we were selling for quite a long time both S and V70 SEs. I bet more SEs were sold in the US than in Canada since Canada is such smaller market.

        even T5's? S70

I guess I thought that the s70 t5SE was distributed heavier in Canada. When people (and the dealer) see the leather/suede seat combo, they said they have only seen them on Candian SE's, and that there weren't too many (SE's like it)in the US.

Oh, heres a link to a previous brake discussion with my response.

Whats the "SR" on your car mean?

Is the SE basically a GLT? The GLT and T5s share same basic
suspension (with sport suspension optional on T5 and T5 having
    lower profile tires).

I've driven the base model as a rental car and it was kind of
    spongy (for a European car).
