Performance 850 1995

I bought my 850 GLT 1 year ago. What are some simple things I can do to improve hp especially since I drive at high altitudes?

    I live in Denver--Mile high--5280 ft.

I understand that as long as the car is fuel injected that the injectors automatically adjust for altitude. I have an 850-R, so the turbo does help, but I also owned a 94 base model 5 spd, and never had any problems with performance. In the mountains at 10-11,000 ft all cars are going to have a tough time, with exception of the turbo. Remember though, at this altitude 10,000 ft, it is going to suck gas and a lot of it.

In town, I average 18.5-19. On the highway I get 29-31.

    Hope this helps.

Use the proper octane gasoline. Don't haul excess cargo around with you, keep the car as light as possible. Remove roof racks. Maintain the recommended tire pressure.
168 hp is not terrible for the weight of the car, but if you are really interested in a performance volvo, get a turbo version.

is your glt a 95 model? if it is, it's a normally aspirated engine and not the light pressured turbo model...so...imho, there really isn't all that much to tinker around with (normal things like exhaust, air-filter) to help offset power loss from high altitudes. i could be wrong, but anything else (nos, etc.) would really cost $.

Yes it is a 95'. Sorry for my ignorance I'm new to tinkering with my car. In the past I have just used my car to get from one place to another, but since I bought my Volvo I love driving. It's like I'm sixteen and just got my license all over again. Are the air filter and exhaust the only normal things you can think of? When you refer to the exhaust do you mean reworking the whole system.

Usually the sport exhaust system starts from the catalytic convertor and it gives you maybe 5-10hp more. Removing the conventor is illegal but we did it anyway and gained few extra hps. Żou really notice the difference on high revs.
Free flow airfilter element gives you extra power&torque to lower revs and response to gas pedal is much better. Both improvements are very easy to install and quite cheap. Good luck!!

Any suggestions on the free flow air filter?

I“ve used K&N filters in my GSXR and Volvo but I suppose you can choose any high-quality filter on the market. The most important thing is to keep the filter clean&properly oiled after installation. You will get all the necessary service information from the filter package.
