gas mileage 850 1997

In recent months I've noticed a decline in gas mileage of about 10%. Don't think it's weather related. Had full tune up approx. 20,000 miles ago. The car has 145,000 miles on it. The service engine light is on, but I believe this comes on based on mileage rather than a specific problem being detected. Any ideas?

If your check engine light is on than you have to drive your car to a dealer for reading codes from your ECU.It is not possible to do it yourself because your 850 is 1997 and you need scan tools to read it.It`s not like the older models till 1995.About your service light:that`s a warning light for oil change or something like that. When you change the oil you must reset your service light also with scan tools at your car dealer.P.S.If the fuel filter is dirty that can increase the fuel consumption, old sparks and air filter too.I suggest you to replace them.Than the fuel consumption must be back to normal.

I have a 95 850 and the check engine light means there has been a problem detected. The service light does come on in intervals, I believe, as you suggested, for oil changes and the like.

I would start by pulling codes anyway. I know the 95 has an on board, user friendly computer that makes it possible for me to pull codes and reset the service light. I'm not sure about the 97's.

I agree that 10% isn't much. That can happen if someone gets in your car and drives with the defroster on.

145,000? Time for a timing belt?

What kinda mileage are you getting? Around here they reformulate the fuel for winter/summer. Makes a difference. What kind of plugs did they install at the tune-up? Can you pull any codes? Are your tire pressures correct? 10% isn't much.

Getting about 19 mpg in mostly 15 mile drive one way to and from work. Probably average 40mph. Was getting 21. Highway dropped from 25 mpg to 23. Don't know brand of plugs, but garage ticket says "FR7DC". Tire pressures are good, in fact tires are almost brand new. Hadn't thought of gas change. Thanks for your response, and let me know if you have other thoughts.

Get the Volvo double or single platinum plugs (depending on whether you've a turbo or N/A). Bet it makes the difference.
