Help (please) with Engine Check Light V70-XC70 1998

Good afternoon.
I'm new to "Brickboard" but a long time Volvo owner (an '84 240, and now a '98 Cross Country). I realize the "Check Engine" light is a common problem, but I need to see if anyone has had success in dealing with this issue. The "Check Engine" light has appeared, along with the car running rough, sooty exhaust, and a strong sulfur smell coming from the exhaust. Unfortunately, the local independent Volvo repair shop cleared the code #'s ("#231 and "#232") while doing the diagnostics and suggested that since the car was still under warranty, it be done at the local Volvo dealership. (The independent shop would be happy to do the work, but they also have to charge me.) The dealership says they can't do anything since the numbers have been cleared. Since the numbers have been cleared, the car has been running fine, but what do these numbers indicate, and is it a serious (time and $$$) repair to ensure it doesn't happen anymore? Has anyone else had this problem??

    It has the 231 and 232 codes and they apply to oxygen sensor. Your dealer doesn't have to have the codes present to diagnose the problem. They can test the oxygen sensor and determine if it's faulty. It costs approximately $300 parts and labour to replace one (your car has two) but it's probably just the front one that triggers the codes. But if your car is still under warranty I wouldn't worry. Just tell them what the codes were, get a work order opened so if your warranty expires you can still have a chance to get it replaced free of charge if testing doesn't find anything.

      Just a note regarding O2s V70-XC70 1998

      actually, 231 and 232 don't mean "bad O2 sensor" as hinted here, it means that your fuel trim was not within specs and fuel trim can mean many different things and doesn't pinpoint a specific part such as an O2 sensor. A vacuum hose leaking sets off fuel trim codes. If the codes havent returned, they're intermittant and the car would most likely not test bad when looked at via Volvos VST.

      If you had a bad O2 sensor on a XC (which there are 2), you'ld get different codes than 231,232.

      I'd say that unless the check engine light reappears, keep driving it and don't worry but if it does return, have the dealership check the codes as I understand their position too in that they can't replace parts based on codes that they didn't see. They can't replace parts that test OK (on request) because Volvo tests warranty parts and will bounce their claim if the part tests OK when tested.

        Just a note regarding O2s V70-XC70 1998

        Bad O2 sensor will throw 231 and/or 232 codes among others. However the main reason to get the car diagnosed and tested is make sure everything is OK since the warranty is about to expire.
