central locking / alarm 850

Okay, my car likes to unlock itself. Here are the various symptoms...

When I park the car and lock the doors (remote no longer works, tried resetting it but no luck), all the doors lock as they should, and most of the time, not always, the alarm light goes on. Within 2 minutes or 3 hours, it's totally random, all the locks pop back up. If I open the door right after this happens, the alarm will sound. If I leave it alone for awhile (maybe an hour), the alarm will not go off when I open the door.

As far as I can tell, no other electrical systems are effected by this (I've had a battery drain problem, but recently pulled the glove box light which may have been the culprit, but too soon to tell).

Also, if I'm driving the car with the doors locked, they will unlock randomly.

I had a post about this earlier and got a suggestion from Ho to clean the ground connection for the battery. It didn't fix the problem, but it did bring the alarm back to life. Thanks, Ho. (I also fixed a bad Cruise Control hose while I was at it -- works great now!)

Well, I've been dealing with the problem for the past 2 years by pulling the fuse for the central locking control and just locking the doors manually, with no alarm. I'm ready to get my car back to normal.

Finally, while I was working on this yesterday, the alarm horn died and now only emits a faint buzz (the flashers work fine though). Could this be a battery thing or just a worn horn?

Anyone have any clue as to what might be going on? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance...

Jonathan

I would first disable the alarm completely and see if the central locking settles down. Presume you know where alarm module is (else remove glovebox, and look for rectangular module with light green connector (4 wires) against the A-pillar)

If it still goes awol, then you may have a short in the unlock wire (from memory it is a different colour for each door/boot - check Haynes manual) but I doubt it as you allude to it being vaguely time related and not totally random.

Over the weekend, I thoroughly cleaned the ground cable for the battery, and I also got into the dash and checked all the connections to the alarm unit and remote reciever. Nothing tricky, I just made sure everything was tight, unplugged a few connections and reconnected them, checked the relays, etc. Holy Cow! It's working perfectly. Finally. My remote still doesn't work, but it's probably the remote (you should see it). Also, my battery drain issue has gone away, and as for the buzzy alarm, it was just a loose resonator on the horn. Everything is normal.

I bought my '94 about 2 years ago and have been trying to deal with some of it's issues. Thanks to everyone at brickboard, I'm quickly learning how to troubleshoot and solve many of the problems that torment the average car owner. My check list is getting shorter!

Thanks again!
Jonathan
