Notice oil around plug wires during plug change 850 1995

Basically what the subject says. I changed the plugs on my "new to me" 850 T-5. After I had removed the cover I noticed what seemed to be a lot of oil pooling ontop of the head. I checked the oil level and its fine, so my main concern is
A) where is this oil coming from and then
B) how do I stop it from getting there.

Thanks for any insight on this.

Eric C.

It's probably due to being spilled during oil changes as oil must be fed very slowly (requiring patience) or it spills over. This is commonly seen in most "white engines" so I'd degrease it carefully, making sure to not use water and fill the spark plug holes which'll happen unless you can blow them out with compressed air, and keep an eye on it after being degreased. Make sure the oil fill cap seal isn't dryed out either. Unless you change your own oil, there's no way that you can prevent whoever's changing your oil from adding it too fast thus spilling it over. I use a homemade funnel restrictor that makes it impossible for the oil to go in that fast.

Thanks for the information. I cleaned it up as best as I could, but I didn't even stop to think about the oil fill cap. I'll check that out tonight!

2 ways. Weak/worn oil filler cap gasket and oil being spilled when pouring into the filler opening

I think my filler cap is getting a little old.
Got a little seapage.

How often should you replace?
Are the OEM caps pretty cheap?

rd,

I bought a few gaskets for the cap from the dealer, I think they were about a buck each. That seemed to work well at cutting down the seapage.

Good Luck,
Kele'

Thanks,

I didn't know you could buy the gaskets seperately.
