Weird Whirrrrrrrr??? 850 1994

I recently purchased a 1994 850 Turbo wagon, and have noticed something weird, and that something is a "whir" (that's the only word I can find to describe it). Basically when I accelerate I hear a "whir" which gets higher in pitch the more I depress the accelerator pedal. I don't know if it is due to a "leak" in a door seal or the sunroof, or if it is coming from under the hood. Could this be a loose belt? Or a door? Or a window that doesn't quite go up all the way (I have rolled the window all the way down, then all the way up and still hear the noise). I have also brought the windows all the way down and I can still hear it. Any thoughts?

    CMS,
The whirr you are hearing, as some have eluded to, is from the turbo spooling up. I have 2 T5's and both have this sound. One of these cars i recently changed my air filter from stock to the K&N type and noticed immediately that the whirr loudness increased (even my wife noticed, asking me that day if the car was ok). Next time you hear it look at you turbo gage and you will notice as the turbo needle increase (Boost) then the whirr sound increases. Mine is loudest just after the boost passes the center. Once the boost returns more or less to nominal the sounds dissapears.

I have the same kind of sound on my mazda RX7 turbo too.

The famous 850 whistle!...This has been debated for literally years here on brickboard with many a suggestion, but never a definitive answer given or agreed on. Others have referred to it as the mysterious whistling noise. It happens on 850s regardless if they are Turbo or not. For example, it happens on my '94 N/A, but only in cold weather. Something others have noticed as well (cold weather). Some have suggested the Turbo, others a vacumn leak, others wind noise from a specific cavity in the engine compartment. It does appear to come from the right front area and I have just accepted it as an anomily of the car....and years later it still remains a mystery!

      You are right it's a bloody WHISTLE! 850 1994

YES!! It is a whistle, I thought about that as I was driving to work this morning! Tonyg, you nailed it and it is *exactly* what I was referring. Funny thing. I'm just glad others have brought this up in the past.

mmm... I want to clarify something here. The Ghostly Moan Syndrome (cold environment triggered, front right under hood origin) is not a whirr, and thus I'd wager this brickboarder is not speaking about it. GMS is a long, dying, well, ghostly sound.

Sounds like this driver is hearing simply the turbo spooling up.

I'd guess turbo noise. Or as the Italians say when talking about engines, "at's a no noise, at's a sound she make."

I hear it on my '95 855t with 77,000 miles but only during the first few minutes when cold. After that it's very quiet. I don't beleive it's a problem and I kind of like it. Like the straight cut alloy timing gears in my Moto Guzzi LeMans.

Could it be Normal Turbo Noise? 850 1994

Could it be Normal Turbo Noise? 850 1994

That's another thing I was thinking of as well. But it seems to coming more from the driver's side right of the car, than the left where the turbo is located.

      Thanks!

I've heard the same noise. I think. Mine sounds like a howl and only first thing in the morning. It varies in pitch depdnding on RPM. At idle while coasting the moan is gone. And it disappears after 2-3min. My mech told me that it's the accy belt tensioner nothing to worry about. 94 855T 190k km
