Tire Size Questions on 850R 850 1997

I know this has probably been asked before and I found some old information in the archives. So from what I gather my car was sold with the 16 inch instead of the 17's. Original tire size says 205/50/16 but hard to find and potential bent rim situations. It currently has 205/55/16 tires that only rub in at steering lock. From what I can tell they switched the tires around 96 from the 205/50/16 to the 55 series.

Has anyone ever put on 215/45/16 which would be the proper plus sizing. Any help would be appreciated as it is time for new tires and I would like to make the right purchase.

205/50/16
205/55/16
215/45/16

What would be the best choice and the pro's and con's.

Thanks

Tony

    Tire Size Questions on 850R 850 1997

I bought a 95 850 turbo wagon a year ago with 205/55-16 Dunlop SP Sport 4000 A/S tires and they fit fine. I have the original window sticker and it was originally delivered with Michelins of the same size. There is some slight evidence of rubbing in the wheel wells but I haven't noticed any while I've had it. Might have been earlier tires. You'll be fine with those.

What I want to know though is would the Dunlop SP Sport 5000 Assymetric's also be OK? Tire Rack's comparison charts show they have 0.2 inch more section width and 0.6 inch more tread width. These are cheaper and apparently better in almost every aspect according to those charts, and W-rated too!

    Any experience anyone?

    Tire Size Questions on 850R 850 1997

    Tony,

Going through the same dilema. Thinking about switching to 55's from the 50's that are on my 95 850 turbo. I'm told it would give a "softer" ride with the 55's. In addition tire selection at that size is much greater. However, I'm getting conflicting data. Called a few Volvo dealers and recommendation from the tech's is to stick to the 50's. Volvo of America said I can safely switch to the 55's. Also received the same report from a reputable local tire dealer. Tire rack has had some complaints of tire rub from volvo owners when they switched to 55's. The way to get around that is to change the fender liners to 96 or newer liners...........If anyone can help with this, it would be greatly appreciated......Question is will the 55's get me a better ride? Is it worth the hassel of changing the liners? Help !

    Sal

Tony, for 16s, everything I've read says 205-50. BUT all tires in the same size are not necessarily identical. If you go on tirerack.com you can find all the specs (tread width, contact patch size, etc.) for just about all available tires, and you can compare and see those which approximate the factory recommended size(s).
